Just turned 18!
And am now awaiting for my PAL (possession and acquisition) to come in. I had my possession license before but you can't own guns until your 18. Anyways it'll be 6-8 weeks plus time for them to look at the application - till then I have time to mouth water at the rifles I plan on getting. I don't have my restricted license so no handguns or short barrel rifles or shotguns.
First thing I'm going to invest in a .22, just for plinking, maybe small game. maybe ill scope it aswell... Ill probably get a fairly nice one as I want it for long-term.
I plan on acquiring a small collection of surplus rifles. My first one might be a friends lee-enfield but not sure, I haven't even looked at it. I want a lee-enfield and mosin-nagant in this collection, the rest I'll see.
Ill hold off till next hunting season to get a shot gun. I go turkey hunting at least once a year so now I'll finally be able to shoot one with my own shotgun .
Any suggestions? Discuss
I'll defiantly re-post when I get my PAL and get some of these. There is a gun show near here just a few weeks after my license should come in.

Re: Just turned 18!
Mosin Nagants are a good choise, i do not have any experiense of them but in all other "recommend me a rifle" threads pepole ahve talked about Mosins.
Only weakeness is the shitty corrossive russian surplus ammunition.
Edit: *thinks about my post* Wow, that was really a typical mall ninja post.
Example: The H&k 416 is the best because Discovery says so!
*lol* anyways, don't worry. some more experienced gunnut will lead you soon.

Re: Just turned 18!
+1 for the moist nugget, ammo is cheap and available for it right now and will be for some time because 7.62x54r is used by many nations in their machine guns to this day, so surplus will be available for years to come. 303 (Enfield) is getting scarce, nobody uses it any more and only a handful of countries ever used it anyway. Enfields are fine for the collection but don't expect to be able to shoot it much or cheaply in the future - unless you get one that's been converted to 7.62 NATO, or stockpile 303 now (and that's really too late because the good British stuff is already gone).

^^ It'll be for the collection for sure. Especially living in Canada where aside from historical pwnage, they're cheap and plentiful

I'm sure, been trolling around this forum for a while. It seems more tight knit than many others.

Re: Just turned 18!
A 10-22 seems in order, or some bolt action .22. I love the bolt action .22's; they teach you a lot about shooting before moving on to bigger things.
As for bigger things, I'd get a Mosin, a Mauser, and the Lee-Enfield. If your resources stretch that far maybe an M1 Garand or a P17 Enfield.
No collection is complete without at least one of these grand old shooters. .
For when you're ready to move on to even bigger things, I'd recommend both an AR and AK of some kind, an FAL if .308 is your thing. You might want to get a Ferret .50 someday, but that's a long term goal.
As for handguns, when you're ready to move to those, a BHP, an XD and a SIG are the best choices in my book. Replace BHP with 1911 if .45's your thing. Stay away from the .40's and 10mm's; ammo is more expensive and they don't give you all that much of an advantage. You only need 5 calibers for handguns actually: .22LR (Walther P22 seems to be a good choice), 9mm, .45, .38spl, and .357 Mag.
A good revolver in .357 Mag is also in order, Ruger Redhawk being a good choice, and you can shoot .38 with a .357 handgun.
Get a Luger if you can. It will give you major prestige. If you can find a .45 Luger for a reasonable price, by all means sell your car and buy it. One day you'll understand .
This is a good list of guns you can work towards.

Re: Just turned 18!
^^ As I read that I came to a said realization myself I'm trying to stay away from handguns, they are a bitch to have. Its okay to have for self-defense but say I want to go to a range. I'd have to call up the ministry and tell them my exact route, who i'll have in the car, what times i'll be gone for, etc. If they catch me stopping for coffee on the way, I'll get charged. And not a slap on the wrist either....sigh, no autos, and semiauto center fire guns have restrictions on mag. capacity (save for lee-enfields, m1 garands and some others, thank god) all guns have to be registered as of 01....ugh....I could go on.
And I frequently go shooting, and am very farmilar with guns as I said I had a minors license. Which means I can borrow and use the gun unsupervised but can't own one or be in possession of it long-term.
I'll probably go as soon as I get my license and get a 10/22 (would you recommend a new one?) and a scope for it as well. Can i recommendations on cheap scopes maybe 4x or 6x for a 10/22? I know BSA makes hella cheap scopes, but I'd like one that'll last.
As for that gun show thats coming up Ill keep an eye out for those surplus rifles.

They don't let you have Semi-autos in Canada?

Re: Just turned 18!
^^ Oh gawd no!
"semiauto center fire guns have restrictions on mag. capacity" on semi-automatic center fire guns (and shotguns) the magazine is restricted to 5 (save for a few exceptions) to limit deadly shooting sprees to a maximum of 5, if you get all headshots. Unless you have another gun....or reload :l stupid, stupid law.
No restrictions on rim-fire though.

Re: Just turned 18!
I would reccommend against a 10-22. I have nothing against them whatsoever as I have never even seen one in real life (bare with me here) from a logic of what you will be buying later on down the track stand point: Get a .22 Brno bolt action, basically a mini mauser action, it will give you a familiaraity with bolt actions and the techniques are all the same as you go up in calibers eg. getting mausers, enfields adn nagants. They are very accurate, and you can get one with a 5rnd flush mag pre ground 3/8" dovetail in the reciever fairly cheaply, add a mid range scope and you have a great little rifle for plinking, rabbits and whatever crazy critters you folks have in canada eh?
If you have your heart set on a semi auto .22 then I'll leave it to the yanks to reccommend their favorites.
