I'm that man ->

Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
I am a nice guy.
I am the guy that will give you his last cigarette if you want it, I can buy some more later.
I am the guy that will shout weed, it really isn't the most important thing in my life.
I am the guy that will clean up after a party before leaving, I wouldn't want to clean it up if it was my house.
I am the guy that calls older people by "Mr/Ms [their last name]", I think it is a sign of respect - I wouldn't want my childrens kids to call me by my first name.
I am the guy that never hurts people or animals with intent.
I am the guy that will fix your computer free of charge if I can.
Where is the line betwen being the nice guy and being everyones bitch? When people meet me "bitch" is the last thing that enters their head. I am a gentle giant, it's not my apearence. It's just that if I shout someone a couple cones or help them move some furniture around the house I expect the same treatment back.
I stick very strongly to treating people as I would like to be. It's just that I never get treated the way I treat people.
Meh. Bored, slightly drunk and pissed off.
I am the quite guy that goes postal one day and everyone who was an asshole to them wonders "Why? He was such a nice person".

Re: Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
You can be a nice guy without being a bitch, you just have to set boundaries and when their crossed, cease to be a kind guy. Sounds like your giving too much respect to everyday people that haven't earned it nor have any interest in returning it.
A lot of people suck. Remember this.

Re: Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
Definition time:
Being nice: Doing something that benefits other people without putting yourself at a disadvantage (ie. holding a door for someone behind you, helping someone find their way, giving away a spare cigarette or a few shots, etc.)
Being too nice: Doing stuff that benefits other people at your own expense. (ie. if you give away your last cigarettes or beers just to accomodate others, and you are left wanting)
Being a bitch: Doing things that others order you to do. Whether the task actually is difficult or not is irrelevant, because you lose respect and self-esteem by taking orders.
You strike me as being "too nice", but you could easily fall into the "bitch" category if you're being bossed around. While their technically isn't anything wrong with going out of your way to help others (ie. that could bring you joy), I suspect it's probably because you want people to like you. It's counterproductive, as people that are "too nice" are basically just viewed as "useful" and "convenient", as opposed to good company or interesting individuals.

Re: Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
When it comes to material things (paying for meals with friends, covering movie tickets or whatever) I'm pretty generous. I lucky enough to be able to afford it and I know my friends would do the same for me. It's no fun when someone gets left out because of money.
There are also common courtesies that I recognize. Too many people are assholes these days; I like to show people that it's nice to be nice.
I don't think I'm a pushover...

Sounds just like myself. I go the extra mile for other people (and girls) and I really never get anything in return. (especially from girls) It's not that I always expect anything in return, but it just seems to me like my actions always go unappreciated.

Re: Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
Well, i have been to the too nice category many times and the lesson i have learned is: GROW UP!
This motherfucking world is insensitive to guys like us, the best approach is IMO:
Help them but if they the treat you like the own you, fuck them up and leave them completely. I did this with three people already and in two days with 4 people. Take control damn it, people should earn your respect.
Don't be a bitch, be a pimp and pwn all those bitches. People like us have a lot of potential to fuck people up if we really want too.

Your "too nice" category is what everyone should be. Your "nice" category is simply not being a jackass.
To OP: I think the difference between bitch and nice guy lies with the people around you. If the people around you are halfway decent, they'll respect your generosity and not take advantage of it. If you're surrounded by douchebags, then you're going to be taken advantage of, and you will become the bitch. Solution: don't hang out with faggots.

"Hurting" yourself for the benefit of others is basically volunteering to be the host of a parasite.
If someone genuinely does feel pleasure at helping others, more power to them, but I would bet money that the majority of you are shy, asocial losers that think everyone around you is "mean" for not being your friend when you're nice to them. The fact that some of you are complaining about other people not being as nice as you and not respecting you pretty much proves my point.
For those wondering how I do things: Some "nice" things are just reflexive. I briefly hold the door even if there isn't anyone behind me, and in lectures I don't leave my shit lying in the aisles. If people request something from me, the rule is: if I don't want to, I usually won't. If you feel that you're at a loss after doing something nice for someone, then it defeats the purpose. The only time I'll consciously shortchange myself is if it's temporary, or for a greater cause. Doing it just to appease other people, and then feeling bad about being at a loss, is fucking retarded.

I would be highly impressed with anyone who helped clean up the mess after a party. That is highly cool and respectable.

I guess that highlights a significant philosophical difference between you and I. I don't see giving away my last cigarette or beer as "hurting" myself at all.
I would agree with you on the second point though, being extra nice (more nice than you'd normally be) just to get someone to like you is bitch status.

Re: Being a "nice guy" or a bitch?
I guess my niceness has been shining through on a daily basis with school. I feel bad when professors ask a question and nobody's willing to answer it, so I, seemingly endlessly, participate in class discussions. It gets old.
Holding a door for people is another bad habit that I'm not sure if I'll ever shake.

I don't see it as a bad habit. I see it as entertainment. I look back and judge the person walking up, if they are interesting enough, I'll wait and hold the door if they are less than 3 seconds from the door. If they look like the kinda person that doesn't deserve to have the door held for them, I will act like I am gonna hold it, then just kinda smirk and keep walking. The reaction is funny on occasions.
