Al + Fe2O3 from ebay
Should above purchase be made, is it likely that the purchaser would receive questioning from someone governmentally related? I know ebay's not exactly the most covert of sources, but they have cheap Al and Fe2O3, and they're really simple to use. This could probably go in other forums or threads, but I figured I'd get the fastest answer from the most knowledgeable people by asking here.
I ask because there's a few items on ebay I can all but guarantee someone from some agency would pay a visit regarding. IE pure iodine crystals, bulk cold packs, etc.
Edit: interesting note on the iodine crystals, btw. When I ran the search on ebay a few months ago, the "related searches" ebay turned up were "red phosphorous" and "pseudoephedrine". I lol'd.

Yeah, no one will care if you're making thermite as long as you're not doing something stupid with it. It's something that isn't regulated at all, and is legal to make and use. You can actually buy premade thermite from UN. Go for it.

Re: Al + Fe2O3 from ebay
Anyone ever had a batch of thermite go up like flash? Say like a 5g batch, trying to light it for like 5 min then POOF, whole fucker goes up? Sent molten iron everywhere? 'cause that shit sure didn't happen to me like 5 minutes ago. Seriously, that would be way fucked up.
EDIT: Hypothesis- Though at standard temperatures, thermite behaves sluggishly, at elevated temeratures, when the current temperature of the whole batch (IE small batches) is close to the decomp temp, when one molecule goes, they all go.
Conclusion- To people who have less common sense than they should^^^, probably not a good idea to light small batches of thermite with a blowtorch. Heats the whole thing too much, winds up acting like some molten iron throwing frag grenade. Bad shit.

If they come knocking just tell them you bought it to show to your science teacher at school. Or you wanted to use it in a science fair or something. They wont ever come but you can always ponder.
CuO/Al Thermite goes off like flash Yah I have had some stubborn mixed I made that wouldnt light with just Mg along, but were on the edge. I have often torched the pile until it turns red to raise up the reactivity and then stick in the Mg ribbon and light that.

Anyone ever tried Zn/Fe2O3 thermite? It seems easy to prepare.
And, yea, better to have the excuse than not.

Buy Iron Oxide from Lowes as cement pigment and ball mill some Al foil for aluminum powder.

When you can buy it for 4 dollars a pound it's actually cheaper to buy it than make it, at least if your method to make it is HCl/NaOH and steel wool.

Re: Al + Fe2O3 from ebay
You can actually get it around $1-2 / lb at ceramic supplies, and even below that if you buy like 10lbs or something... in which case its much cheaper than your time.

Pretty sure both of them arent illegal to have....otherwise get a friend to order 1 to his house, and you order the other then give him the money for it.

It's definetly not illegal to have both the Al and the FeO seperate. I don't know about the legality when mixed though.

Supposedly thermite's legal to make, possess, and use, assuming you're not using it for anything illegal (arson, vandalism, etc...). BTW, it wasn't a problem.

Re: Al + Fe2O3 from ebay
You can just go buy high yield thermite, and the starting compound is usually right next to it . Yet, making thermite is like 90% of the fun, its pretty boring.

Well it's a relatively easy way to get iron, not that that's any useful, but you can also get glass from it if burned in sand. But other than that there really no great use for it.

I bought pre-made thermite and later separate aluminum and iron oxide powders off Ebay over the last couple years, and no one ever contacted me about it.

Yes and? National security's got a file on me, nobody ever contacted me about that, doesn't mean the paperwork isn't out there.

Re: Al + Fe2O3 from ebay
*shrug* I think this falls under a principle I always try to teach people wanting to do illegal stuff, that law enforcement isn't omnipotent or omnipresent. The fact that you bought thermite isn't the same as proof that you were the one that used it to burn down a building in the next city. (Even though arson investigators know how to spot the specific burn pattern of thermite, but anyways...) Even though it's watched more tightly, it'd be like saying the cops are going to track everyone that buys a pry bar at Home Depot just in case they might be burglars.
The nice thing about using thermite for destructive purposes is how much evidence it destroys in the process...you can google news interviews with police investigators saying how hard it can be to detect thermite after use, especially if everything else around it was burned, since nothing is left but small traces of iron.
Of course, if you're the only person that bought it in your neighborhood in the last month and your next door neighbor's cat gets melted, that's your own dumb fault.
And there's always ways to muddy the trail...have a friend in another state buy it, repackage it and mail it to you, or drive it over. None of my sellers ever had to report what was in the box they mailed, there aren't any hazmat requirements. Buy it and sit on it for a year before using it, so the trail gets cold. Buy it and use it out of state. Make a purchase on the sly with the seller outside of Ebay. Or use it in such small amounts that the trace evidence will be minimal. You can even post a video of yourself burning it in some stupid way on Youtube, saving just a small portion for whatever you had in mind...if the cops even knock on your door, you can claim you burned it all a long time ago, using the video as a kind of proof.
As long as you plan ahead, there's not much the law can really do to track you. Just don't be a poster-on-the-wall anarchist and stockpile thermite at home that you don't use, just because it feels cool to have it. Only buy enough for what you need, and use it all when you do.

If you making it yourself, Al + Fe203 is fine, But if your gonna just go buy the crap off of Ebay anyways get the Fe303. It has an extra oxygen molecule therefore burning hotter.
