Classical music on LSD
Why is it so fucking mind blowing? My friend SWIM is a fan of classical music. While he was tripping he threw on some harpsichord sonatas by Scarlatti and couldn't stop listening for the life of him. He lost track of time and before he knew it he had listened to about two hours worth of harpsichord sonatas. Classical music can be dangerous stuff. It's just... overwhelming.
Here's an example of what he was listening to.

Re: Classical music on LSD
Classical is complex music, psychedelics can help you and other non-musicians focus your attention on the several components as one. People who play a lot of music well can usually do this on their own and are able appreciate the different types of music more then most people.
Some modern songs are very very simple, and put more focus into the lyrics then the music (although that can be great). But certain songs still have nice mind-massaging qualities. I think many of the more mechanical, computerized songs nowadays are great for losing yourself like that.

Re: Classical music on LSD
Personally I think pretty much everything is mind blowing when you're tripping on LSD. I tried listening to some Wagon Christ when I was tripping balls (also known as Luke Vibert. it's like electronic kind of stuff). It was really cool, but I was paying more attention to the fact that patterns covered everything in my peripheral vision. I was surrounded by all these lame people who weren't tripping. I was talking about my trip and they were laughing and being all "patterns? HA! that's crazy talk." as if it was an old wives tail that LCD makes you hallucinate.
That's the last time I'm tripping with non-tripping people. What a buzz kill.

No.
It's because unlike contemporary music, classical music was extremely deep and provocative...Some of the greatest minds of any field were classical composers.
When on LSD your mind responds with extreme intensity to anything deeply embedded with feeling or emotion, there is probably no better representation of such emotion than classical music....

Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor Op 85 is fucking breathtaking.
Vivaldi is good, but not quite AS good, Verdi is fantastic (in particular Dies Irae, a classic, it sets some terrifying visuals off in my head)... Stravinsky's Firebird Suite too goes down a treat...

FMJ I've never heard Elgar's cello concerto, but i'm a fan of classical music. I will have to give it listen.
Have you heard Dvorak's cello concerto? It's one of my all time favorite pieces of music. The Bach Cello Suites are amazing as well.
Music this good sounds great wither your high or not :P

I haven't listened to Dvorak's while high but it's certainly a wonderful piece of music. I think I'll do that on friday night, thanks.

Re: Classical music on LSD
I think I tried listening to classical halfway through my last LSD trip and I couldn't do it just because I tend to like to listen to one artist or genre through the whole trip, at this point I was already listening to some jammy live electronic stuff. Maybe next time. But i've heard that classical is amazing tripping, maybe go camping and listen to some classical and just watch the day go by.

Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto.
His violin concerto was marvelous as well. It's the music in "The Right Stuff" if you ever saw it.

Re: Classical music on LSD
Sometimes when I'm scrolling through the radio stations I'll come upon a classical music station, bump the volume up in excitement(thinking that it's techno), only to be tricked. Fuck Classical music.
I'm willing to bet though that a large component of the synergy between LSD and Classical music is the result of sublime/romantic/spiritual undertone found in most songs. The feeling of an insignificance relative to the overwhelming vastness of a larger being, such as nature or a godly entity. Keep in mind though that most Classical music was commissioned by churches, and that the "middle ages" were pretty damn religious times, so I'm only 3/4 sure on the nature aspect.

I forgot about them! For more modern bands structured the same as classical check out: Oceansize, Sigur Ros, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, and the Sound of Animals Fighting. Peace (and milkdrop ftw... although I prefer watching the BBC's Blue Planet with the volume turned down, and one of the aforementioned artists playing).

You showed me Sounds of Animals Fighting years ago, I forgot all about them. As well as Mars Volta. That one time on those mushrooms Mars Volta had me freaking the fuck out. I don't even know why it scared me so bad. Jesus that was an epic fucking trip. I'll never forget you calling whats her cunt saying "some bald dude is here and I don't know who he is and he won't go away"
lol, my queue to leave
She was such a bitch.
It really blows my mind how some people can be SO close minded. Your world isn't going to magically fall apart if you try something new. Fucking squares.

I love classical. So does SWIM.
Anyway as to the battle between classical and metal, Classical has been around for ages, and hopefully it will be. Oddly enough the only other kind of music that I think will do the same is Metal. Rap too.
