Default Part time work

I want to find part time work that:

1) Pays fairly well

2) That has a future (be able to move into full time, support a family on, etc.)

...Yup those are pretty much my only 2 conditions. I wanna have 2 days off a week.

How hard is it to find PT work in say a construction field. Either heavy equipment operators, or maybe while doing a apprenticeship. Also -> Any opinions on shift work? Do you find that it'll interfere too much with social life and mess you your days and shit?

Note: no job is too menial or below me as long is it pays over $15 and has future prospects.

Thanks

Find a road work or wood/metal working company which will let you work just a few days a week. If you are solid worker, and have some skill, I am sure someone would hire you.

Realistically, if you don't have a specific skill to market, $15.00 is out of your reach to start.

Look into Union work. With steady pay increases and hours based on seniority, job security is great and you can work pretty much when you want. You will start off at low pay, but stick it out and you can make good money.

^^ Sry I probably should've said - I have some experience in construction work, quite a bit in windows and door installations, and a bit in other light construction.

I have connections with a paving company, pretty much every trade, and public housing.

A company is going to be recruiting for flight specialists, and 2 types of air traffic controllers here (similar jobs but flight specialist is less money but less work...) But the only thing I am worried about it the shift work.

I think shift work would be excellent. Working 3 12 hour shifts a week gives me four days off a week. With a full-time job pay (flight specialists = 40 000 + after 1 1/2 years of training and air traffic controllers = 80 000 after 2 years)

The only thing I worry about is my social life. What if I had to work friday noon-midnight, sunday midnight-noon then another mid-week shift. That kills my weekend and social life What do you think about shift work?

Oh and Affect, what do you think "no job is too menial" means? Was that word above you?

Everyone has to work. Realistically you are going to mix it up so that you are getting a fair amount of Fridays/Saturdays where you can still go out, but not every week. I personally think its better to make a better wage, and have more expensive fun on the days I do have off. Also, while you have your time off, and your social circle is working, you have money to afford to do things to keep you entertained.

Also, it is pretty easy to find people who also work the odd hours and form a mini-social circle within those people. You can hang with them during off-peak times and have some fun.

If you can keep your body and mind straight, and learn to enjoy mid-week fun, the pay is so much better, and job security is better when you are the guy who works the hours that most people wont.

Families do suffer though, if you are looking long term. Financially they do great, but wives hate it, or love it if they hate their spouse.

Thanks for the opinions

A few jobs/careers I was thinking of getting into:

-Crane Operator
-Heavy equipment operator (excavator, bulldozers, etc.)
-The company which I'd be working the above does snow plowing in the winter
-Flight specialist/air traffic controller
-Masonry
-Entrepreneur (Take over dads company replacing doors and windows*see below)
-Friend offered me part ownership of his window cleaning business.
...There is more, can't remember right now

About taking over my dads business. He owns 50% of the company which pulls on average 150 000 a year profit split between both owners. they plan on retiring in a few years or I could basically take on my own jobs. He says I could make $5000 / week during the busy months (summer time). He has 2 or 3 employees who are either unemployed over the winter or find their own work.

The only concerns I have over doing this is one: The recent economic hardships in the states are bound to hit north soon enough. A lot of the work is for the government renovating housing units. Windows in housing units are usually one of the first things to go if the government is in need of money. (As my dad learned early on in his career).

Next is finding employees. My dads employees are either too dumb to find other work or too lazy. The one guy is an alcoholic who after 20 years still makes basic mistakes. The other 2 are in their 30s working for my dad for 5-10 years. One smokes dope all day and is happy with a joint and $20 bucks at the end of the day. ...My point is that the workers are incompetent and unreliable.

Ideally, this is how my business would run: During the summer months I'd take on 2-3 majors jobs which usually take 2 months to complete. As soon as I finished the jobs which clear 30-50000 each I send my few employees to do several small jobs to basically only support my workers. During the winter I could have the be unemployed or have them work for a cleaning company (they need lots of help during winters when ppl track in salt and mud) or a snow plow company, both of which I have ties too. I'd probably take the winter off and maybe have 1-2 side jobs. Could I find competent employees who would work such a lifestyle?

TL;DR I might take over dads buisness but am worried economic trouble could create lack of work. Also I don't know if I can find competent employees who want to work odd and irregular times.

Maybe if I pay them well, give them a few small jobs at the end of the year (give profits completely to them) I wouldn't have to worry. Most people in this company and job hit the ceiling at $25/hour. I guess I could give them a one job bonus at the end of the year for 10 000 a peice to keep them going in winter. I dont know...

Thanks (this really could've used its own thread...

I dunno, I am a pretty lazy guy, so I cant give much positive input when it comes to hard labour. Your dads company sounds like you would have to bust your ass really hard for those few months, then pretty much do the paperwork/management in the off season.

I personally am more inclined to take jobs which spread the work evenly over the year, but like I said, im not one for manual labour.

Have you actually done what your dad does? Like, have him put you to work so you know if you can physically cut it?

If you are going to have employees eventually, you have to be able to do every job they may face, as well as teach them to do the work. Also, if they flake out on you, you gotta cover their work, which means back-to-back shifts of the shit they should have completed.

The first few years are completely on you. Until you really know the business inside and out, you cant trust employees. A bad fuck up will cost you everything. When you run the business, you may run yourself into a debt that you will have to work your entire life to pay off.

If you just become an employee somewhere, that stress is all on someone else. You arent trapped in one career. If something pisses you off, fuck it, you move on.

Crane operators can make a good 100k-200k/year, without pushing themselves that hard. And that is world-wide work. Technology isnt interested in replacing a good ole fashioned crane for the next few hundred years.

If you are willing to move around, 250k-350k is definitely realistic for 60 hours/week, with holiday time off. But, can you do it?
