If you dont want an explosion, you'll need to start a plasma reaction and use bare exposed wire. as the gas turns to a plasma, it becomes conductive, and shorts the circuit along it's leading edge.

Oh, and a magnet wont erase a HD, heck, there are two really strong bitches INSIDE the hard drive case...
