Other things to include if you are planning on actually being homeless for a bit:

Survival blanket, like the tinfoil shit from any Hunting/Outdoors store.

Lighters/Matches.

Toothbrush and paste.

Deodorant.

Pack of cigarettes to help start conversations with connections you may need.

Cheap watch to keep track of the time, nothing worth over $5.00.

Over the counter medications like Tylenol etc.

A big water bottle/thermos, maybe two.

If you can grow facial hair, and it doesn't look good on you, pack a razor and shaving foam as well. You can keep yourself neatly groomed in any public restroom.

If you don't look and smell like shit, you are able to hang out indoors most of the day instead of what most bums need to do, which is sit outside in their own urine 24/7.

Hospitals are great for the homeless:
If you need a place to sleep in the winter, just make sure you don't smell bad, and go to a hospital. Even small ones have "quiet" waiting rooms designed to let people sleep in, or you can chat up a patient and see if you can sleep in there, grab some food they don't want, put your pack in a drawer, etc. In every room should be a cabinet full of supplies (alcohol pads, antibiotics, etc) you can easily walk in, grab a handful of, and walk out. You can do the same in the emergency room with gauze pads. They also have extremely cheap buffet food. Some waiting rooms also have a public computer and high-speed internet, free phones, a coffee machine, tea, etc. Great places to sleep & have breakfast. And free medical treatment/advice/questions at the clinic.

If you're really hungry, walk into a restaurant where you "sit yourself" and can't easily be seen by employees. Snatch up any tips or food left behind. McDonald's food is disgustingly made, but if you stomach it, they're $0.49 (or $0.89?) are fine if you don't feel like grabbing leftovers.

Wal-Marts are perfect spots to steal & sell shit, and sleep if they have furniture for display on the floor. Befriend some of the workers & they might let you buy shit under age (knives, etc), or vouch for you if you get caught lifting or sleeping.

You can sit inside Starbucks' for as long as you want, they never say anything.
