PARIS, France (CNN) -- The political and social rift between France and the US continues to grow as the French government demand the return of the Statue of Liberty.
The statue, a gift from the government of France in 1886 to commemorate the centenary of the signing of the declaration of independence, has long been the symbol of freedom and hope in America, but now the French government has requested that the statue be returned to France.
The widely criticized request was the result of tensions between the two countries over world issues including the war in Iraq, US criticisms of the French nuclear stockpile and weapons testing.
A spokesperson from the French government has described the recent behavior of the United States as "Boldly callous" and "Totalitarian", and has emphasized that the ideals that the statue stands for no longer apply to Americans.
"This is a sad state of affairs for the relationship between France and the US." Said David Robinson, US ambassador to France. "The statue means a lot to Americans, and to take it away would be a grave injustice."
President Bush is yet to comment on the situation.
