Could hydroponics burn the house down?
Hey i am an avid indoor gardener, i use a 400watt hydroponics in a small area no bigger than:
1 metre x 40 cm.. basically the size of a table.
I thought there would be too little ventalation but the plants grow fine, a problem i have is that is smells like burning after about 3 minutes, will my house soon catch on fire?

Re: Could hydroponics burn the house down?
Get some fans to increase air flow, maybe set the light up before you put plants under it and run it and check if theres any hot spots with a thermometer.
Im not 100%, but 400watts sounds like too much for such a small area.

Re: Could hydroponics burn the house down?
Yea im going to buy a few desktop fans to keep the area cool, i will have to get a thermometer to keep track of the temperature.
I'm starting to think i should have bought 200watt.

Re: Could hydroponics burn the house down?
See if you can take it back and get a smaller one. Im not 100% sure on this, but you need like 150watts per plant. And HPS lights are bad for confined places because they heat up, so you need the fans anyway, or else you have burnt leaves. Also helps strengthen the stem, which means it can hold more bud. Have one blow air in and one suck air out(preferably outside, above the fence level, around 6')

Re: Could hydroponics burn the house down?
you want about 2250 lumems per square foot for good vegitative growth
get yourself some good ventilation humidity and heat are bad .. to much humidty is a breading ground for bacteria and fungus ...
and heat could be a big problem i would certainly get a thermometer ..... i would say 30-35 degrees C is perfict .... i have a small button fan and some ventilation hose from my indoor grow room the hose is extremly cheap from alot of hydro ponic shops .. .
let me ask you this thou your pumping 400 watts but what plants and how many of them ?
also your distance between your plants and the light makes a big differance and the type of light
if your useing HPS or MH lights then you may want to consider a cheap air cooled reflector
cheers,
Warweed

Re: Could hydroponics burn the house down?
Hey i currently have
1 marijuana plant growing, i have many seeds i want to plant as soon as i get the hydro all sorted out.
The hydro is 400 watt HPS.
I want to buy a themometre this week.
Is 400watt HPS,
too much for about 3 - 6 plants?

No, just make sure theres enough room between them and the light.
OP:
Make sure you use metal hanging, I used plastic pullies and luckily the worse that happened was getting melted plasic all over the place but it could be worse.

invest in some led's.. they run cold as hell.. plus you save like 70-90% on your power bill..
