What is the proper ettiquette? I find myself bumming more and more... And occasionally being hit up for one, but I cannot return the favor as I dont have any... Is this breaking some smokers code?

last time i was at valley fair, a guy came up and asked, "can i buy a cig from you, i got a dollar". they guy seemd nice enough, so i just gave him one for free.

just be nice, try not to seem like a total jackass. its always nice to talk to the person a little bit, specially if your the one bumming

He sees that I start reaching into my pocket and says "He'll give you one, but only for a song"

Strange night that one, I think there was some ketamine afoot.

If it gets to be a habit and you're around the same people constantly, you're going to look like a jackass. Everyone will know you as the cheap fuck that always wants to bum a cigarette. I can't stand those ass holes.

Generally if you are asked for a smoke, after being there yourself at one time or another you repay the favor if able. If it's ongoing ii suggest the puff puff pass routine.

Repeat after me: "Hey man, you got a smoke?"

No shit. I was asking if I was breaking some unwritten rule.

I'll tell you what you don't do. You don't hang around and try to make small talk because you think you owe it to them or you have some crazy notion that because that gave you a cigarette they like you.

I usually have smokes, but when I do need them, I only asks for smokes from people I don't like very much, or don't know. Around my friends I usually only ask to split a smoke with them, which is the general etiquette for our group.

As for lending smokes, try and keep track of who gives you smokes. If you have smokes and see someone who gave you smokes the day before reaching for one of their own, offer them one of yours. "Hey dude, thanks for the smoke yesterday".

Generally, the dude who's always saying "Spare smoke" but never dishes looks like a douche.

Also, if a person says no, don't hassle them.

Another thing we do in our group a lot is ask for a smoke for more then one person. Example "Hey dude, could I get a smoke so I could spit it with *other person who is smokeless*". The person is more likely to give you a smoke if it's for more then one person.
