So my dad, my girlfriend, her dad and me
I dont want to induce a tl/dr thread so long story short:
I am moving in with my girlfriend and my dad is driving me there and her dad is doing the same, so it is inevetable that we will all be in one place and go for a drink or osmething.
my main worry is that he is a very reserved english man who doesnt like dirty humour.
my dad is a German in your face kind of guy who thrives in dirty humour and has no sense of social tact whatsoever.
and me and my gf are stuck in the middle, niether of us no what to say to our own dads let alone the other persons dad.
The thing is they both have a healthy appetite for drink and both have that kind of post middle aged man grump humour, which makes me think they could get on till my dad put his foot in something.
I think I need to man up and take control of the situtaon and try and dominate the conversation to stop my dad from making some bad social faux-pas and keep some kind of semblence of normality.
What do you think?
What do you think.

Know what I think little man?!
I say you take them both down the pub and watch the fun. Don't see it as a bad situation...See it as hilarious interaction!
You and your bird are alright together right? Why should this matter?!
So what does it matter if your old man and her old man get along?! Watch your old man get pissed and say some funny shit and watch her old man say "Oh my..."
Get over it you little Kraut. You'll be fine!

Well you can't really force people to like each other.

OP, even if you try to stop them it wont work and it can make the matters worse. Just take it easy and keep the conversion around you and your gf or something interesting.
and oh yeah i forgot.
Good Luck you will need it.

Re: So my dad, my girlfriend, her dad and me
I suppose it doesnt really matter if they don't get on. It's about me and my gf but it would be nice if it didn't end in akwardness.
I just know what my dad is like he is going to do soemthing which requires under th table nudging or subtle comments in german to him.
I think I will try to keep the conversation on neutral ground.
To psycho8b: when I think about it I cringe and laugh at the same time because I can picture it already happening.

Keep the conversation on topics German and English men can agree on.
Why the Nazis should have won.
Why does the Queen have such an attitude.
Why is the German school system so pornographic.
Why do certain countries produce more scat adult films then others.

Oh, shut the hell up, I bet your dad isn't so bad. You make it seem as if the second you go to the bathroom he will go on a string of Princess Diana jokes ( Why did Princess Diana cross the road? She wasn't wearing a seat belt). Nor do I doubt hers is very eloquent.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble but all old guys are just dirty old men at heart. Let them have a drink together and enjoy the situation.

Re: So my dad, my girlfriend, her dad and me
I make a point of NOT socialising with the parents of my sons' girlfriends. Sure I'll chat for a few and be polite but go out together? No wai!
I've bought a car off one and fixed computers for the other but go down the pub together? I'd rather spend the evening scrubbing stains out of the bath.
I'm just a social cripple.

you just described my Dad to the T. he's born german and everything.
in this situation I'd just talk to him before hand and say that your gf's dad is a stiff and don't be too rude. To which he'll probably make some remark but whatever.
I think you'll be suprised at how much decorum he'll use and Im sure her Dad will be forgiving if he slips up and lets out some distasteful jokes, solong as she likewise warns him beforehand that your dads a bit crude/word of your choosing.
I find parents tend to suck it up in these situations and act nice, even if they dont like eachother, for the sake of the kids.
