Question Screen Resolution

I installed ubuntu a few weeks ago and I haven't had any problems. I use my monitor for my xbox as well so that involves plugging and unplugging of computer to the montitor. I haven't had any problems except the other day when I started my computer a box came up saying it couldn't detect what monitor or drivers I have and if I wanted to do it manually. The only problem is my monitor isn't on the list of preset ones. I tried doing a generic LCD Panel 1440 x 900 but when i hit okay and restart I still am unable to change the resolution. Help?

See if "bullet-proof" X made a backup of your xorg.conf file (in /etc/X11/) and see if you can restore that from before the part where you screwed it up.

If that doesn't work, google for a valid modeline for your monitor and put that in xorg.conf.

I looked in the folder and there was a bunch of xorg.conf files (xorg.conf, xorg.conf.1, xorg.conf.2, etc. and two xorg.conf.failsafe). I'm guessing they are from times when I tried to configure my monitor. Should I just delete all the ones except xorg.conf?

EDIT: I booted into recovery mode and ran xfix and now I'm at 1024x768. I still have all those xorg.conf's though. What should I do?

those files are backups. X only reads xorg.conf, the others don't make a difference.

you should find a backup that was last changed just before you messed with X, rename it to xorg.conf and it should work. ideally you should make a backup of the current xorg.conf in case you just make it worse.

the moral of the story is that most apps make backups of the various config files they use, and if something goes pear shaped just revert to an old one. most of the time that fixes it, and by comparing the two you can see where you stuffed up.
