Ashcatchers
Are they worth it? I mean does it actually cool down the smoke more?
http://www.torontohemp.com/products/redeye/906.jpg
This is the one that is available at my local headshop. It's going for $40. Would this be worth the money is or it just waste. Would I be better off with just a normal bowl?

Re: Ashcatchers
i would assume so, your just about doubling the amount of water filtering and cooling your doing.
but if you want cold smoke, get a bong with an ice catcher... an ash catcher will filter out more of the tar and whatnot but it can only get it as cold as the water is.

Re: Ashcatchers
the purpose of an ash catcher is not to cool the smoke, but to catch the ashes so they don't get sucked into the bottom of your bong and make is gross. with an ash catcher you only have to clean the ash catcher regularly, not the bong itself. if i had a top of the line bong and another forty bones to sink into it i would buy an ash catch...

Waste of money, just don't be lazy and change the water after every session.

Re: Ashcatchers
yes just what you need, something to make your bong even more delicate, put more weight on the female, and oh can you see? smoke goes from here to there before i inhale it. so cool, totally worth the left nut it costs..
a good slide>ashcatcher/thingermabob any day.

i agree.. but they are nice, it's especially nice to have a bubbler on the go too..
however, the delicacy is an issue, my friend has bought 2 or 3 and he's only had his bong for 6 months or so.

Re: Ashcatchers
They're not bad. It doesn't hurt to filter a little bit extra, but $40 is a bit much. Head shop around here sells prebubs for 15-25 usually. Also, prebubs with carbs on them are balls. I don't understand why someone wouldn't just want to pull the slide.
Though I introduced one of my friend's roommates to them, and now everyone has to hear how fucking great ashcatchers are everytime someone mentions a bong. They're not that good by a long shot. Just kind of cool, at times.

how do you like the double dome perc? I personally prefer tree percs cause they produce almost no drag, my buddy has a lux with a double tree perc and it hits as if they weren't there.

I agree with your conclusions but I still use an ashcatcher for most of my day to day smoking. With the amount of weed that goes through my bong each day, even if I change the water after each session I still have to clean it every couple of days or it gets nasty tasting. with the ashcatcher I only have to clean it like once a week or less.
Whenever I'm smoking my good weed or hash though I bust out the bowl and burn it on a glass screen.

Re: Ashcatchers
Why not make your own? I used vinyl tubing, a prescription bottle, and a drill. The difference isn't big, but you can definitely distinguish the smoke as cooler and tastier.

Actually it is a tree percolator. The dome above it is something called a "cyclone", which makes the smoke spiral up the neck instead of just rise straight up. When it's filled with ice, the smoke spirals around the ice before getting to your lungs :)
The down stem is a diffuser, too. Tons of filtration in that bong o' mine. Smoked a half gram of danky dank in it once and fell back on my bed. Couldn't see or hear for a few minutes :D
Couldn't even feel the smoke.

yea I can see now the top dome isnt a perc. around here we call it a splash gaurd (cause it prevents water from the perc splashing up to your mouth). Now unless Im missing something in the picture im 99% sure thats a dome perc.
with a dome perc theres a verticle tube that ends inside of a dome that has holes in the bottom of it.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ee/Percloseupc.jpg
With a tree perc that same vertical tube splits into 4 (sometimes 3) separate tubes and curve back down into the water. I havent seen any tree percs that have not been on either a lux or a toro, their very high class.

What kind of bong is that anyways? it's a really nice size and the perc placement is awesome. I have a friend who has a dome perc bong but its halfway up the chamber and takes alot of lungpower to clear. with bongs like yours the smoke tends to pass through the perc quickly and build up a nice fat chamber above.

Re: Ashcatchers
It's a PHX. I don't know if the company is out of business or if the headshop nearby just stopped carrying them.
It is a nice bong, but in all actuality I'm looking for something a little more compact. Preferably about half a foot shorter, with a small main water chamber. Still want my percs, diffusers, and an ashcatcher, but definitely wanna get a different catcher. Really like illadelph's ashcatchers http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8463/img1226cl1.jpg
Trying to get rid of this one.

Re: Ashcatchers
the ashcatcher I have doesn't have the removable bowl, its just got a built in bowl and downstem. I prefer it cause theres less weight hangin off the front of my bong.
