Default Propranolol

Right, I've been prescribed propranolol 160mg extended release capsules (it's a beta blocker) for anxiety. They took me off xanax since I've been munching on them like smarties (this, surprisingly doesn't make me drowsy in the slightest - it just normalises me). I've been reading up on the little info there is on this drug and people seem to be given much smaller doses. The question is - do they have any recreational value? If I say crushed up the beads and snorted/ bombed them would they chill me the fuck out? Anyone here have experience with this drug? There seems to be fuck all info around on them.....

No recreational experience.

The most it will do is alleviate the physical symptoms associated with anxiety and panic attacks such as chest "pains", shortness of breath, sweating, shaking, etc. As far as the mental aspect of things go, it's not going to help with shit there.

Next time be smarter about the Xanax.

Cool cool, I go and see the regular doc on friday and tell her they're not working and try and cop some clonazepam or diazepam. The prob with the xanax was they were only giving me the .25's so I had to take 2-4 to alleviate the anxiety. Hence 20 of them isn't going to last me when I'm taking that twice a day. The withdrawals from propranolol seem to be alot more dangerous than benzo's. They're just concerned about giving me benzo's because of my addiction history. Anyway, thanks man.

POC, how good is propanolol for treating physical anxiety (nausea, high heart rate, jaw tension, weak legs, cold/hot feelings, sweating, trembling, jumpiness) compared to mainstream benzos like valium, xanax, ativan, etc.

i ask because my anxiety is like 75% physical and 25% mental (huge guess you cant actually measure it) and i wanna try a little test if i can get ahold of this stuff to see how mental my anxiety is. if i can get a decent hookup i would definitely buy this if it works well and uhh, do something else wit ze benzos..........

I'll be honest with you; I've never taken it. I do, however, know a good deal of people who have, and am familiar about it's basic mechanisms of action.

From what I've heard/read, it's supposed to be ideal for what you mentioned because it blocks the effects of stimulation on the adrenergic receptors; as in, it helps to stop any kind of symptoms that could be caused by an increase in adrenaline (basically everything you mentioned). It used to be used for hypertension pretty often but it seems to be less favored for that now and more often these days used by doctors for the reasons we're talking about here.

Wiki says a lot of people use it for "stage fright", which makes sense.

If you truly feel your anxiety is mostly physical, as you said, test-running some propanolol and recording your perceived effects sounds like a fairly good idea. Just make sure you only use a reasonably therapeutic dose and, if you can, do it when you're already anxious about something and/or are experiencing those negative physical symptoms.

i think it sounds like a pretty decent drug. from what youve heard, do you get the impression that its more or less effective than benzos?

since its used for stage freight, im not sure if its more or less effective because it doesnt effect cognition, like benzos do, so that may be the reason its used or becasue its better than benzos (physical anxiety wise)

also, irritablitity, jumpiness, and restlessness (and of course excessive worrying, but i dont think im that far above the norm), are those physical or mental?

Again, it depends on the origins and nature of the patient's anxiety. Some people suffer from dehabilitating mental anxiety without exhibiting any physical symptoms, in which case propanolol isn't going to help much.

However, as you said, the advantage of using it over benzos is likely attributed to the lessened side-effect of cognitive impairment and sedation for people opposed to those kind of things as well as the fact that it won't lead to the hellish addiction that is benzodiazepine dependency.

I'd say irritability is mental and the rest are physical. Well, restlessness can be a bit of both, really, especially when its cause is rooted in things like racing thoughts.

thanks a lot man if i ever hear about anyone with this drug im definitely gonna try and snag some haha. its too bad illegal recreational drugs are easier to get than legal medical drugs. plus i dont wanna risk ativan/xanax scripts with doc by asking him to 'try' propanolol.
