Chantix!
So today I started taking Chantix to stop smoking. Has anyone else tried it? I've got a couple of friends that have taken it and successfully quit smoking. So, if you have anything to share be sure to let me know.

Well, if the smoking doesn't kill you, the Chantix just might. And if it doesn't, I feel sorry for your neighbor. Check out this link:

Re: Chantix!
My mom was on it and had crazy side effects. She would wake up at like 3am and be sleep walking and hold a full convo with people and when you would ask her about it in the morning she had no idea. On other nights it was just insomnia....The shit seems pretty dangerous to be using.

Re: Chantix!
Chantix is not a medication you want to be using dude.
It was originally used as an anti-depressant. It has been linked to suicide and even causes diabetes. Taking a medication that was used to alter brain function isn't a smart idea in the least. If your mind isn't fucked up plan on it doing a good job of fucking it up.
There are plenty of other methods of quitting smoking that don't involve fucking with your brain chemistry. I would suggest using one of those.
Also, I would find a new doctor. If the idiot you go to doesn't realize that taking an Anti-D when you don't need one just because you want to quit smoking is a bad idea I wouldn't be trusting him with your health and well being.
I would suggest using google and doing some research on a few of the many other methods for quitting. Hell even Walgreens has some supplements you can take to help you kick the habit. Don't fuck with Chantix.

Re: Chantix!
My friend and her husband both effectively used Chantix to quit smoking with no ill side effects. It effects everyone differently, just like everything else that fucks with your brain.

Yeah, I'm guess a certain amount of the "help" it gives is tied to placebo. Just thinking you're taking something that's supposed to help you quit is a good way to get on the road to being a non-smoker.

If you want to give it a try go ahead. For some people it does actually work and for some it causes them to kill themselves or get diabetes :). I was just warning people of the risks because (to me) it seems that they outweigh the benefits by far.

Uh no. The benefits of "helping" you quit or as I like to call it Placebo.
Plus, you won't have to worry about cancer if you kill yourself :).

Re: Chantix!
I used it and it worked great. i've known numerous other people that used it also and it worked for them too. never heard or seen anything on it being an anti-d. I know zyban is an anti-d, and it has been used to try to help people quit with bad side effects.
i've tried every quit smoking product there is, and chantix, for me, was the only one worth a shit. it makes the cigg taste so bad that you quit because of it. i did a little research on it before hand, and there where some rare cases in certain people where it fucked them up, but thats with any drug, including aspirin.
the only down side effect is it made me tired all the time. i could still function fine, but when i went to the gym or something, i just always felt lazy. what i like about it compared to other methods is it changes the whole way you look at smoking. while youre on it and still smoke, you eventually stop getting any pleasure what so ever from smoking.so you just stop, and what you remember from ciggs after you're done with the chantix, is them tasting like shit, and making you feel like utter shit after just takeing a puff.
check it out, it'll be the best decision you ever made

Re: Chantix!
I took it for a month while in rehab to try and quit smoking.
I had very vivid and disturbing dreams, also bad stomach aches if I took it too late at night, ginger ale seemed to cure those though.
Can't speak on the depression issue b/c I was highly depressed before I started taking it.
I still smoke and enjoy getting one cigarette closer to lung cancer everytime I do.
Edit: I wasn't on it for a month, it was more like two weeks or whatever the recommended time frame was

So far it's worked for me. I still have 4 days that I can some during the treatment, and after 3 days it's taken me from almost 2 packs per day to about 5 or 6 cigarettes a day. So far I'm impressed, although I have had some funky sleep patterns.

The treatment is recommended for 12 weeks, some people take longer some only take 8.

That'd be the wise idea.
Hell, diabetes doesn't run in my family and I ended up with it at the age of 18...and not the "I'm fat or i'm old" kind of diabetes..I gotta take the god damn shots.

psoriasis, eczema, acne ya know, those skin conditions..
i'm willing to bet if you've had an active case of either of the three in the last year or so your doctor would not perscribe you chantix. a definite no if your currently being treated.

Re: Chantix!
Can anyone who has experienced it or knows a bit more about it than I obviously do explain the pharmacokenetic action of Chantix to me? It sounds to me, from what little I've read about it, that it performs a function to cigarettes similar to what Antabuse does to alcohol, ie. makes the substance in question absolutely horrible if the person still chooses to ingest it (Antabuse actually has powerful emetic effects but that's beside the point...).
I'm assuming it would work on all nicotine, and more so towards making the effects of the nicotine itself unpleasant rather than the taste of the cigarette- because otherwise someone could just toss in a wad of Cope and hey, problem solved.

It's supposed to shut off the nicotine receptors in the brain. It channels nicotine to receptors that make you feel ill. In a nutshell.

Re: Chantix!
So, after 9 days on Chantix, I can notice a significant change in cravings, I went from about a pack and a half per day down to 2-4 cigarettes per day in a little over a week with almost no effort. I've found that if you drink water every time you get a craving that it helps too. I've lost about 5 lbs in the past week. I also quit eating fast food and have drank nothing but water, and a beer or two every other day. So far I'm thrilled with the results.
