Dial up LAN
Ok I live in an area where I cannot get high speed internet at all. I have 2 neighbors both using dial up. If all three of us invested in a second phone line and kept it connected to the internet all the time, and connected all three computers via LAN, then would this make my dial up faster?

Re: Dial up LAN
No it wouldn't. It would still go dial up speeds, and the bandwidth would be even more stripped from multiple computers using it. Sorry dude, you're gonna have to come up with another plan.
I guess your best bet is to try building some kind of signal booster that can get very long range signals. The record for a wireless network range extension is something like 55 miles.

Re: Dial up LAN
Yeah yeah I'm working on that...... Can't seem to find an old sattelite dish though. Town's only 15 miles away there is still hope. But I still wouldn't be able to play my ps3 online as there is a delay.

Re: Dial up LAN
I thought since you can get a land line then you should be able to get DSL. I used to live in a rural area of Kentucky and that's how it worked for me. Should also look into satellite internet, it's no where near as reliable as DSL or Cable but hell anything is better then Dial up.

Again, compared to what he has now that's no big deal. Hell, a 10GB month cap would still be worth it in his case.

Will most deff. look into that as we have a landline. Also I am a VERY heavy downloader, but a 10gb/mo cap i could work with. Hell even a 5gb/mo cap, but the thing I dont like about sattelite internet is the price. It's anywere from $150-$500 from what I have researched.
EDIT: I checked the avalability of DSL with 2 companies so far and of course it's not offered. I just don't get it. I understand with cable companies, as they have to make putting a cable line down the road worthwhile, but doesn't DSL come through the phone line as well?

Re: Dial up LAN
I can get cable but not DSL where I live. I ended up getting Comcast High Speed. The only two companies offered in my area are Verizon DSL (no FiOS) and Comcast. Comcast is the only one available where I live, but it works because it's fast as shit. I feel bad for you man, dial-up can drive a person insane. 6 kb/s tops... eww. I'm getting 1.7 mb/s tops now. Makes me feel kinda guilty.

Re: Dial up LAN
You should be able to cover 15 miles. If these people can get over 3 with a cheap usb wifi chip, you should be able to mooch off of someone with a decent setup.
Use these with one of those dishes, and you should be golden. http://www.radiolabs.com/products/wi...-amplifier.php

IMO stuff like this is fun to do but is in no way practical for day to day usage.
