Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
The only cases I have EVER seen where people got better is where they could just as well have been following some fortune-cookie advice.
I challenge any of you to give me one example of someone with psychological problems(Not schizophrenia and the likes) who got better using psychiatry(meds)/Therapy.

Re: Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
I think most mental problems are caused by a build up of negative feelings that got supressed over the years.
The goal of a psychiatrist is to help you talk about your core problems and help those feelings to finally come out.
In which case the patient does have a role of having to be as truthful and open as possible.

Re: Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
A psychiatrist does not talk to you about your problems, a psychologist does, at least over here.
A psychiatrist asks you if you have x symptoms, matches them up in a book, and then gives you x diagnosis and tells you to take x pill.

Can't a psychologist do both, though? I'm curious because I'm interested in pursuing a career as either a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Re: Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
In Australia, you have to be a qualified doctor, a graduate of medicine who has completed an internship or what have you, in order to prescribe medicine.
The only psychologist (who has to have completed a masters to practice in Australia anyway) who can prescribe medicine is one who is also qualified as a doctor.
Psychiatrists do not care about resolving your issues. They 'diagnose' you and then 'treat' you without ever trying to cure you.
If you want to help people do psychology.
If you want to numb people's minds and fob them off be a psychiatrist.
If you want to manipulate people in to being your idea of a perfect person, be a psychologist.
I always thought psychiatry is evil, they can force people to receive treatment against their will, even if they have not broken the law in any way.
I don't think mental illness does not exist. I think it is a real thing.
Also, with all the writing I am doing lately along with all this extra empathy, I think I am getting manic.

Re: Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
It's something that needs to be done internally....
Psychiatry simply brings to light your problems...Its up to YOU to fix them....
I did this to myself...I essentially performed a psychoanalysis on myself by reading, thinking and writing....I know all the problems I have and now I'm starting to fix them and I'm feeling better each and every day (in terms of self-worth)....
What initially led me to start doing this was smoking pot and taking acid (along with intensely studying philosophy/sociology/psychology).....I've posted shit all around here about those experiences (humanities, headshrinkers)...It's really amazing what they've done to me and how much better of a person I am now because of it...So if you need proof....I'm it........

Re: Psychiatry and therapy does not work.
Yeah maybe for problems with your personality and ways you relate to the world, but what about organic issues? You can't fix them with happy thoughts.

psychologists cannot prescribe medicine, except in new mexico (i am pretty sure). in my experience, psychiatrists do both, but psychologists focus more on helping patients by talking about stuff cause they cant prescribe meds.
however, some psychologists have a psychiatrist they work with, and they can recommend the patient to the psychiatrist for medicine, but still primarily see the psychologist. (though you would most likely have to see the psychiatrist some amount of times a month because they will be giving you medicine
