My dog
I know this is a Ark question but i feel it pertains more to this forum.
The long story: I've always wanted a dog but my dad would never let me have one. I'm 22 now with a stable job and I go to school full time. So, I decided to adopt a dog from my local humane society. I just brought him home yesterday. And I finally realize why my dad wouldn't let me get a dog: I don't really have time for one. He's not house trained or obedience trained. I've tried crate training but it isn't going so well. I have to force him in there. I feel bad leaving him in a cage all day and this whole situation is really breaking my heart.
I love him to death but I'm thinking about giving it another week and then, if it isn't working out, giving him back. I don't normally get all emotional about anything. I thend to keep my emotions in check. But i really am heart broken over this. I feel bad because this will be the third time he's returned. He's gonna get a black mark because I made a rash decision.
What should I do Totse?

Re: My dog
By bringing him home you've made a commitment to him; he shouldn't have to put down because you overestimated your ability to care for him. If it's absolutley impossible for you to keep him indefinitely then you should at least keep him until you've got him house trained enough that you can find him a good home.

I said nothing about putting him down. My local humane society lets you "try" them out for a couple a weeks.

Re: My dog
When I left the wife and kids and i lived away for six months my son still had his dog. A rottie.
One day when I came up to see them I saw the state the dog was in.
The time after it was no better. They couldn't cope with him.
Dog got given away. I found him a real good home, with someone who knows rotties and had space and time for him.
Broke my kid's heart, and i mean broke.
But
You do whats best for your animals, same as you would for your kids.
If you can't give that dog the care he needs then you find him a good home NOW.
Thats your duty.

But if you send him back and no one else adopts him, he'll likely be put down eventually.

Re: My dog
People like you enrage me to no end. A DOG IS NOT A TOY. You can't just give him back because it's too hard to take care of. Although you should. Give him back. Let him go to a good home to people that will love him and care for him the way he deserves and actually consider the consequences before diving head first into a 24 hour commitment. Having a dog is almost like having a child. Are you ready for a kid? Hell no. Was it really so hard to realize BEFOREHAND that you wouldn't have time for a dog? If you're at work 8 hours a day, there's one pretty good indication. Dogs can't sit in a cage all day. It's cruel. And leaving him alone outside a cage for 8 hours isn't much better. Likely you would come home, let him out for 5 minutes, feed him then decide you're too tired to deal with him, most of the time.
Don't ever get a dog again until you learn to be responsible. And the first step to being responsible is finding that dog a good home. And what the hell kind of bullshit shelter lets people "try out dogs for a few weeks?" That's horrible.

Listen here bitch. I know a dog ain't a fucking toy, okay? The dog I adopted had 2 previous owners who were bad and just left him outside all day. I knew what I was getting into. I told the people at the shelter my schedule and they told me if I crate trained him it would be fine. The problem is, I've tried everything they said and he still doesn't want to go in there. I have to force him in there, which is not the proper way to crate train and in no way fair to the dog. I'd rather give him back to the humane society so they can find him a better home, then leave him in a cage for 8 hours a day. I think this dog his been abused in the past and I am not the proper person to rehabilitate him. I'm just trying to look out for the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of this dog.

You and me both.
You try any professional services? I hear they can be a wonder for dogs like that.
