What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
Seems like, at least to me, that there is pressure on today's youth, what with going to college becoming the norm, to choose a career path that will allow them to "make money." This could mean a lot of things, but I think most people envision making more than their parents if they come from a middle class household, as in over $100k a year. I don't think they know what they will do with all their money or exactly why they need it, but they still want it.
How much money would you be satisfied with in your life? Where would it be ok for your income amount to peak at? Where would it be ok for your income level to start at? What would be too little money for you?
It's funny, because I remember thinking as a kid that $20/hr was the start of the big bucks, (Australians, remember, I'm talking about America) until a teacher pointed out to us that after taxes, that's 30 something thousand dollars a year. Which, for whatever reason, doesn't seem like much.

Usually around 100 grand a year. After taxes I'd have 70 grand, which is like what 5.8k a month? I can throw down 1000 on rent, and another 1000 on utilities/food. Thats not to tight of a budget either imo.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I'm 18, make 18 dollars an hour and work anywhere from 32 hours a week to 40. So weekly I make about $550 - $625 after tax. I live in Australia.
Am I satisfied with this income? Yes, considering I have no qualification and the job is fairly easy. (I'm actually working right now.)
Would I be satisfied with 18 dollars an hour when I'm 21 years old and over? No.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I would be satisfied at $70,000 a year, after taxes and including bonuses. I've done the math on it.
I could live a fine life at $40,000 a year, after taxes.

You won't be satisfied with less than $200,000 a year, after taxes? How do you intend to earn the money and still enjoy a life outside of work?

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
When I was younger I considered money much more important. Now I'd be happy to have enough to house, clothe, and feed myself, my future wife, and a dozen or so children. Considering the decline in population of whites such as myself, reproduction is now one of my highest priorities.
1 Timothy 6:7-10
"For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Working smart, not hard
Hopefully I'll enjoy my chosen career and it'll pay well enough for me to life nicely.
Of course I would be content with anything 50k +. But 200k is my target.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I'm looking to start on around £35k+ when I finish my degree, I pretty much already have the job lined up. I'm not too bothered about a social life for a few years at least. I won't be happy until I'm earning £60-80k a year which would be a primary income, along wit investments and secondary income I'd like to be earning over £100k a year by the time I'm 30.

To those that posted larger amounts: What do you plan to DO with all that money though? Obviously savings are important, but...you can't take it with you when you die, you know. Plan on having spoiled little children to leave it to then?

I haven't decided completely. It depends on whether I end up achieving the goals I set myself, if I do end up making as much as I hope, no, it won't all be left to spoiled little children. If I have a lot of money upon death the majority would be left to my family, the ones who need it most, the rest would go to a charity I should think. Although it is a little early for me to be planning my will at the age of 20.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
umm.
i'd get about 50k starting minimum.
which is enough for some,
but i would like to buy a house (houses here cost a million, and in the city cheaper houses cost 400-500 thousand).
you can barely survive on 80 thousand here because of the cost of living.
so i will say 130 000 - 150 000.
what will i do with the money.
well i would donate alot of it to charity.
(im not kidding)
i won't let my kids be spoilt.
i'd make them get jobs when they are 15, so they know the value of money.
ill give them $200 each month (given that they're over 15)
if they go and spend it all in one day, to fucking bad, wait 29 days.
ill let them learn how to budget.
i guess buy a house.
however, before all that though i would probably invest the money in stocks.
tbh, over a certain amount of money, there's not much else you can buy, except more expensive versions of what you already have. (and the diff. between the price and quality isn't worth it).
so yes, i will donate alot of it to charity.

You don't need a high income to buy a house. Mortgages exist for a reason; most people will never consider buying a house with cash.

What sort of house? What's your chosen career?
Why not buy a house with cash? It ties up assets and makes you look terrible on paper; this assumes that you don't have millions, or hundreds of thousands, of dollars sitting around in a bank account.

Good luck getting a mortgage without a high income right now... seriously, I know people who would literally kill a man for the chance to get a decent mortgage atm.

30000 a year sounds pretty decent for me. I mean, when I want to settle down and start a family it needs to be more, but I don't plan on that till I'm 30. If I have enough to get by by myself on, I'll be satisfied.

There are a lot of places in Canada that you can get a mortgage with ease. The housing market does vary; just because it's poor in your area doesn't mean that it's poor everywhere.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
250K plus. I can get by on 10-20K by myself if I really wanted to, but after watching idiocracy, I plan on having as many kids as I can. With a redheaded wife. That way I can carry on the redhead gene as well as spawn as many intelligent babies as possible. And in order to do this, I need money to support them.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I would be satisfied if I earned enough money to have:
a flat or loft in San Francisco and one in NYC
couple different motorcycles, cars, trucks
money for all the intoxicants I may desire
the ability to just up and leave the country whenever I want
spending money to blow on whatever I may want
That would satisfy me.
Realistically though.
A loft in SF
A motorcycle
Food/necessities
Art supplies
Then a little extra cash to just blow on some random stuff

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
It depends on a lot of things. If I get a wife and have kids, I'd want to be making at least $60,000. If we're talking early-20s, fresh out of University, I'd quite frankly be very happy making $30,000 - $40,000 a year. I don't need to be surrounded by luxury. A nicely furnished little apartment, sporty little sedan, a nice guitar collection, and some other fun toys are all I'd really want as far as luxuries go. If I remain single (never married), ~$50,000-70,000 would be my target for when I'm around 35.

Vancouver and Montreal (among many other cities, those ones are just the best IMO) are just as win as anywhere else in the world -- more so, in fact; it's common knowledge Canada is one of the most livable countries in the world (much more livable according to the HDI than, let's say, the UK or the USA). Canada is great, STFU.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I would be more than happy with any income that would allow me to rent a nice, clean, safe place to live, allow me to pay all my bills and necessary expenses without going into debt, and have a bit left over for little things like new clothes, art supplies and a night out now and then. I would be ecstatic if I was fortunate enough to have enough disposable income that I could put some away for the future.

I'm going to go into an engineering degree specialising in either mechatronics or computer, most likely computer though. From that I'll start off in a job that pays whatever. Just something to put my degree into practice and make sure I have what it takes.
Once I've done a few years of working I'll look into starting my own company. Specialising in custom designs and solutions for client's. I'll also be working on my own ideas and selling bits and pieces.
Any extra money will be put into funding a hobby shop where I'll hire a student looking for a future in the same sort of area.
[ahh the dream]
Obviously 200k a year is not the average but it sure as hell isn't extreme.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
I feel somewhat pressured to make a lot of money because my dad makes well over $300k. I'm really not trying to brag, but I feel that anything less would be a failure. I still want to go into something I'd like. So I figure in order to incorporate something I like with lots of money, I'll go into business. Hopefully it'll work out.
I think this whole income thing depends on how you grew up. I'm sure I could live on $50k/year but it doesn't feel right to me.

I once worked at a sales company that sold toner, and our top sales rep made $20,000-$24,000 per MONTH, consistently.
So there are many ways to do it, just depends how skillful you are.

Re: What amount of income would you be satisfied with?
Technically, you're supposed to make 40x your monthly rent (to rent) per year. Say rent is 800 a month for the sake of argument (in reality, $200-300 more than a 1br apt. costs here, but it doesn't hurt to adjust for inflation or area relocation), that comes out to 32,000 a year. That's, what, ~$2667 gross per month? Good thing I'm going to college, 'cuz that's more than anyone I've ever known makes by about +35%. And that's just to rent a shitty one bedroom.

Yeah, but you're also kind of stupid and misguided. I know what philosophy of life you are trying for, based on reading your posts, but your immaturity holds you back from actually doing it right. It seems like you'll get your wish of being dirt poor and "free," but you'll have mental problems by then so you won't fully enjoy it or realize it, and will probably die young.
