Yeah, that's why I am not only a mod, but one of the most loved posters on this board.

Ignorance deserves to be insulted. Don't be ignorant, and I won't have to insult you. I'm sorry that some random asshole on an internet forum hurt your feelings.

Cry me a river, build a bridge and get the fuck over it, pussy.

Well you seem to be pretty bothered by it to me, otherwise you wouldn't be whining like such a little pussy. Be the way, I'm not going anywhere. No one forced you to read my posts, if you don't like them, skip over them. It's as simple as that. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Just because your ignorant 15 year old ass doesn't love me, doesn't mean you speak for the whole of the forum.

In fact the ONLY time people bitch about me is when I hand them their ass, which is only made possible through their own laziness and ignorance.

Don't give me an opening, and you won't get hit.

It wasnt a stupid question... rain helps shrooms grow... so logically watering grass might help them grow, just because you wouldnt ask it doesnt mean its stupid. And no youd be surprised but some totseans actually arent dick heads... you and stupid noob must just be funny that way.

So, since water helps marijuana, peyote, mimosa hostilis, sassafrass, poppies, and ergot grow, by your logic I could go water my lawn and have damn near every major drug just pop up out of nowhere?

Also, you have a LOT to learn about mushrooms. Each mushroom is not independent of another, they are all part of the same organism, that is rooted deep underground. The mushrooms are merely fruits of that organism. Water doesn't make them grow, in fact in mushroom cultivation very little water is used.

no... by my logic, it was a question worth asking, can you not fucking read my previous post or somethin? And no, since shrooms 'already' grow in my garden, water should 'help' them grow, not make them...

and arent shrooms like 90% water or something? then again... alot of things are.

In England, at least, there aren't any poisonous Liberty Cap look-a-likes. So the worst that would happen if he ate the wrong mushrooms is an upset stomache and possible diarrhea.

The irony is almost more delicious than even caek.

SN, completely coincidentally, did in fact give you a mycologically-accurate description of the life cycle of the particular class of fungus.

Your mycological contribution, on the other hand, has been to assert that unidentified organisms are perfectly safe to eat. Which, incidentally, means that you might in fact just kill yourself.

So, anyways... I forget, is it the lamellae of the marginata or the semilanceata which are adenexed?

I met some guys from Ireland in Toronto this summer. They said that where they're from, people go out into the fields after it rains and eat a bunch of the mushrooms they find and trip balls.

So maybe there aren't poisonous liberty cap posers in Ireland.

(This is based on hearsay from some Irish dudes who smoked more marijuana than any other human being I've ever met, so I'm not saying it's 100% credible!)

Nice try bud, but you are the one who is wrong. SN is entirely correct. Mushrooms are simply the fruit bodies of the mycelium. And while a high humidity and a moist substrate is required for mushroom cultivation, you don't 'water' them in the sense that the OP was referring to. Don't even try to question my credibility either, I am very well versed in mushroom cultivation.

lol @ appeal to authority (fallacious reasoning)

The initial composting phase of mushroom cultivation requires regulation of the water and NH3 content of the substrate, which is done through - SURPRISE, SURPRISE - adding water! Also, sometimes you have to do more composting during the second phase to reduce the number of unwanted microbes in the substrate, which requires more "watering"... and of course, keeping humidity levels consistent requires the addition of water.

Also, can you explain to me why I see the most mushrooms out in grassy fields after a particularly rainy period?

First off, I said in the sense that the OP was talking about. He didnt mention anything about composting or substrate. He thought he could go out to his garden with a water pail to make mushrooms grow.

Secondly: Some of the natural pinning triggers for mycelium are changes in temperature, humidity, and air exchange ... all of which are effects of rain (go figure). Another (non-required) pinning trigger is the flooding of the mycelium (replicated by growers as "dunking").

Ummh, he just said very little water is used in cultivating mushrooms.

He's dead wrong.

Sorry, but lots of water is used, like everyone has said, about 90% of the weight of mushrooms is water.

Water which comes from a humidifier or spray bottle, as in humidity, which is indeed still using water to cultivate mushrooms.

And I believe dunking is about the same as watering, so once again, there's even more water being used.

Really, you guys just love to suck the e-cock of some people on here.

I am so sick of seeing sacred cows on totse. This is a forum dedicated to information. If someone says something questionable, it should be questioned, regardless of the poster's popularity. In order to truly understand something, you have to forget about your petty pride and question EVERYTHING that exhibits even the slightest flaw in evidence or logical support.

Stupid noob and all you other guys who harp on other dudes for being ignorant - the next time someone challenges you, say "thank you". An actual discussion is where new ideas and solid knowledge comes from. If someone says, "hey, I think you're wrong," and you respond with, "you're a faggot, everyone likes me better than you and I'm a credible source so you have to believe what I say," you've just stopped ALL OF US from learning, and that is a much more heinous offense than any brief, innocent case of ignorance.

Seriously, if y'all are as scientific as you claim to be, you should know that peer review is the MOST IMPORTANT part of the research process. Have any of you ever had a paper peer reviewed? You put fucking MONTHS of consecutive hours into research like that, only to have everyone else tear your shit to shreds and send you almost all the way back to square one, often two or three times. Suck it THE FUCK up! It's not personal; it's teamwork, because we all have the same goal: ACCURATE RESULTS TO REINFORCE ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE.

I know most of you are self-taught in the ways of body chemistry and pharmacology, so I think it's important that you realize that this is the way it is in the academic scientific community, and that's why they consistently put out high-quality research. The studies that are later found to be flawed were often poorly reviewed, or not peer-reviewed at all, and that's why some hasty shit caused them to go "public" before all the kinks were worked out, so to speak.

So let's not say "oh, well this guy is a real authority figure and he said it, so it must be true..."

Nobody is right all the time, okay? And the sooner we can all realize that NONE OF US are immune to constructive criticism, the sooner we can start LEARNING.

I love you all very much, but my insatiable curiosity is stronger.

I didnt come in here to suck anyones e-dick, or start a bitchfit. I was just making some corrections. While everything I said here is correct, the ammount of water is is subjective as to what you consider a little. I was simply correcting the OP in saying his idea of watering isn't exactly played out the way he thinks. This is beside the point here, everyone knows that the OP has some serious research do do before he goes out mushroom hunting. Anyone who allows people like SN to be a hindrance on their education, is a weak minded idiot. This is totse, you get flamed.

I haven't heard of any psilocybin mushrooms, mycorrhizal or not, with mycelium "deep" in the ground. But I think what he meant is that if they're just growing in your lawn, you probably don't need to water them. You got flamed for asking stupid questions that a stupid noob would ask. If you learn more you can become a smart noob and grow mushrooms in your lawn without killing yourself. There are a lot of types that would probably grow well in your climate in your lawn, but you can't be sure till you learn more about them and it would be best to grow them yourself.

Sometimes you can actually type in certain parts of europe into google and find out where the shrooms grow, which roads they grow by. Heheh.
\\
And you'll only need a lot of water if you're doing large bulk grows. Outdoors in hot climates it'll require more watering.

To be fair, he was actually dead right, for wild mushrooms...

...not only was the basic life cycle accurate, but... dry ground will kill the mycellium through dessication. Wet ground, well... will kill the mycellium through suffocation; the little bastards need air.

In nature, "moist" is where it's at. 'n the little bastards are such amazing water-sequesterers that they quite regularly slurp up water not only for themselves, but enough to feed an entire fucking tree, in lands with merely occasional rainfall.

In a sterilized picnic cooler, otoh, you're going to be missing some things. A few that come to mind are drainage, rainfall, a water table, absorptive capacity, volume, shit like that... so, everything they get is going to have to be ported by hand.

I'd imagine it looks a lot different than a giant-ass net of mycelium consolodating small amounts of water from a much broader depth in a much more absorbtive medium. A cubic mile of faintly-moist, mostly-dry soil is going to have a fuckload of water and still not be very wet...

In nature, however, if you see wet earth... your mycelium are dead from lack of air. They don't do standing water and live and they don't do mud, in the sense of mud one sinks in...

Growing on, say, crushed shell with zero absorbitve capacity, however, you're misting the little bastards a LOT to replicate the water content of a large volume of soil that isn't very wet... 'n that can make it look like "a lot of water," rather than "very little water compared to what the soil can hold."

Live off 'em in the wild for a little while. You learn to get a feel for "not dry, not wet."

Yup.

That's what these bitch-fests are. Peer review. At least when they have content, the appropriate response to "fuck you" is probably along the lines of "by what mechanism do you propose that this will fuck me," but... yeah.

The only sacred cow is the hard data.

I should mention that mycelium can be revived after it's been dried out if the network is large enough and no microbes attack it before it's rehydrated. It can last years dry, because it goes dormant. It can start growing again after rehydrating.

Similarly it can last a long time under water and revive again eventually but the chances of this happening are low for your average shrooms. When I first found cubensis, it was in a pasture near a pond. When it rained a lot, the mycelium would be under water in the cow shit because the pond would fill up and expand into the pasture. And after a few days or even weeks of this, it could begin fruiting again when the water level went back down.

You can also keep it dormant in water for a long time. Liquid cultures can last quite a long time after all the nutrients are used up.

Randomly watering your lawn won't do anything though. Learn which magic mushrooms grow in your area and learn about them. Then you can hunt them, in your lawn or where ever, or buy spores and grow them.

The chances of anything good coming from watering your lawn are very low.

But see, mushrooms only grow in humid climates still, and even though you're speaking relatively about the amount of water used, it still takes a lot of water to grow mushrooms, period. If you're going to speak relatively based on the amount of water in the large amount of soil, you must think relatively to the size of the mushrooms also. Considering that mushrooms are 90% water... that's pretty self explanatory.

By hand, or humidifier I guess. I see where you're going with this. I KNOW you're not supposed to hand water with a hose wild mushrooms, I was just stating originally that it was quite foolish to say that there's very little water used in mushroom cultivation. When people generalize, it does bother me, especially when they're wrong. Even in the life cycle in the wild, they still do need lots of water. Granted, that water isn't coming from the human hand, it is being provided by nature. Seeing how much water I have to give to my mushrooms, really helps understand how much water nature must be giving them.

So basically you're agreeing with me, it's going to have a fuckload of water in it... which the mycelium will be drawing water from.

Never grew them on something with zero absorbing capacity. I've always used things like peat moss and vermiculite, and they have a very high absorptive capacity.

Even with pretty moist verm/peat 50/50 mix, I still would keep the humidity to about 95%.

And really, when you start talking about cultivating mushrooms, cultivation means that you or at least some other human is growing them. Cultivation has nothing to do with nature, so I don't understand how everyone points that out, I was only stating that in the process of cultivating mushrooms, you're going to use a lot of water, period.

For being so smart about chemistry, pharmacology a lot of people need to work on their grasp of the English language and definitions of certain words (for example cultivation).

It sounds like the current state of affairs is, "Mushrooms use a lot of water. Watering your lawn won't make your mushrooms grow like it makes your grass grow, but wet lawns grow more mushrooms than dry ones."

Watering wont make the mushrooms grow, but it may iniate pinning with some species.

Shrooms wont flourish in dirt like this:
http://www.extension.umn.edu/projects/yardandgarden/YGLNews/images2/Aug107/drylawn.jpg

But they'll tend to have a better chance than ones in this lawn:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/399967131_2abe61d635.jpg?v=0

If you were to feel the dirt, there should be some moisture, but you shouldnt be able to squeeze any more than a drop or two from a handful of dirt.

You more often see mushrooms growing under tree cover or at least under semi-tall grass. This is because mycelium does not fair very well exposed to direct rainfall. Same with muddy soil and damp soil. The actual fruitbodies don't weigh much in comparison to the total weight of the substrate, so that number may be considered insignificant. Substrate can easily be colonized by cubensis at depths of 6"+. Call it deep, call it shallow; who cares? What Im saying is that this really is a subjective debate. This really depends on what your opinion is on the matter. Nitpicking over this in such an elementary thread is retarded.

your a pretty ignorant piece of shit, and im pretty sure you're not a loved poster on this board... you're too unhelpful and get pissy over nothing and think you have the power to hurt someones feelings by insulting them on the internet. not to mention your arrogance.

just leave...

i think SN is quite helpful and his posts have been wonderfully good when i need an answer. so yeah.

Lucky to be able to cultivate outdoors so easily. In my part of the US they don't grow. Ill probably be buying an All American 941 pressure cooker on amazon for indoor use.
If they dont go all year round you might want to try indoor cultivating.

If you want to do some indoor i would reccomend Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook: Easy Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation by L. G Nicholas and Kerry Ogame. I bought this and it explained mushroom reproduction and the basis very well.

And yeah stupid noob is always attacking someone and stated in this thread that the OP was so easy to troll. I think it's a bad idea to have a moderator that "trolls" their forum. Isn't that what we should try to get rid of?

Meh, I always saw pressure cookers as a waste of money. As long as youre patient, there isnt really an issue with just boiling water. Ive even made some "instant" batches in the microwave. :P

Oh, and being a mod here (&T) is very unforgiving, having a little fun while correcting a few idiots is perfectly fine, as is evading taxes ($50,000 isnt that much after the government takes their share).

i think SN is quite helpful and his posts have been wonderfully good when i need an answer. so yeah.

Sorry gratefulgarcia, you won't be getting the award. That doesn't even qualify as cock riding because there wasn't enough ball licking and no passionate, defensive insults.

I'm just kidding guys. It's clear that none of us have anything better to do. If we did we wouldn't post in such a shitty topic. So the shroom discussion may continue. Flamers, feel free to flame and nitpick, or do the man train, and I'll just discuss.

spencetron, you are very passionate and I admire that. The way you got worked up and mistook my discussion for nitpicking while you became angry and defensive of stupid noob, is very passionate and commendable.

Anyway, I think depth of the mycelium is an interesting thing. I wouldn't consider 6 inches to be deep at all, unless you're a mushroom. Or some other small creature. Cubensis in nature also will not usually have a depth equal to or greater than six inches, and it doesn't grow in soil naturally, so that's irrelevant, you're unlikely to find it on the lawn. In nature the mycelium is usually not deep. This is true for cubensis as well as soil inhabiting species.... That is just my opinion of what I would consider deep though, so there's no need for you to become angry spencetron.

Another interesting thing I've read, is the largest living organism being the honey mushroom mycelium. http://www.extremescience.com/biggestlivingthing.htm

SN doesn't mod BLTC, therefore he can "troll" here as much as he likes... or until a current BLTC mod or admin gets pissed off at him and tells him to quit it, which they won't.

Fucking retard.

in my area, its kind of true of the Weilii.... it grows in bermuda grass, and acidic substrates, pine trees, neighborhood yards, gold courses...

god damn the temperatures are god damn perfect, the sky is overcast, bermuda grass is abundant as well as acres of woods filled with pine trees... RAIN GOD DAMNIT!
