| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

Undiscovered drugs
So like, will there ever be a new weed or alcohol or something like that?
I mean will there ever be new un-synthesized drugs out there that are undiscovered or something. Or are there chemists out there that are working on a new drugs or something? Or are all the drugs known and already have their uses?
Not that I've tried anything other than weed I'm just interested.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
Well... considering that their are approximately <50 uncontacted tribes left in the world, I'd say that all naturally occurring compounds have been discovered. Indigenous tribes/peoples usually have their ethnobotany on lock. I'm guessing the remaining uncontacted peoples aren't tripping on anything new.
As for synthetics.. who knows...probably still shit to be synthed.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
Ibuprofen, and many others, were derived from plants in the rain-forest and we are still finding new things there all the time, so probably. If you mean drugs which will fuck you up/get you high/make you trip, it's less likely we will find anything natural we haven't already, though it is possible. Chemists are always synthesizing new ones in the lab they don't fit your natural category though.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
sure, new compounds will be synthed, some just havent hit the mainstream...
shulgin is known as the step father of MDMA because even though he didn't invent it, he gave it a nudge in the right direction from falling into obscurity...
things like bromo-dragonfly haven't been around long, hell i don't even think its close enough to anything to be illegal in any way...
but most of the naturally occuring ones have been, im sure their is some exotic plant in the rain forest that could be a powerful drug but the plant needs to be found and the alkaloids isolated...

Re: Undiscovered drugs
Take a couple years of chemistry, and then go read "The Simple Plant Quinolines" by Shulgin, and have your fucking mind BLOWN at the sheer number of possibilities that are still out there.
Hell, even in PIHKAL and TIHKAL he mentions several substitutions that show promise, but have yet to be explored.
Yes, there WILL be new drugs, and if I have my way about things, I just may be one of the folks to find a few.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
There will ALWAYS be potential for new psychoactive chemicals.
We hardly know a thing about our planet as it is, and conversely, probably know hardly any of the things that'll fuck you up

Take salvia for example.
Salvinorin A was not even seriously considered, because it was not even an alkaloid.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
I mean will there ever be new un-synthesized drugs out there that are undiscovered or something.
Several.
In fact, most suggestions indicate that the series of undiscovered drugs is literally infinite.
Or are there chemists out there that are working on a new drugs or something?
Yes. It's called lab tips.
Or are all the drugs known and already have their uses?
1. There are an infinite number of possible molecules.
2. There are a finite number of known molecules.
Therefore... ;)
Not that I've tried anything other than weed I'm just interested.
To the best of my knowledge, n-methyl(n,4-cyclopropyl)tryptamine remains unexplored.
Maybe you should synth it and risk your life to try it. Or, if you're not feeling that creative... both TIHKAL and PhIHKAL consist of more "it would be really nice if this were explored, but" than they do actual psychoactives...

While you are here, please tell me your assumption on:
What would happen if i were to decarboxylate D-Phen.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
I had a dream a few nights ago about a really cool plant that you could smoke just like weed except it was blue and you had to break open the thick stems of the plant to get to the fluffy inner part which I rolled a blunt of.
Come to think of it, they do make blue weed, and it is really cool. My dream plant was awesome too, I hope someone invents that.

Re: Undiscovered drugs

Phenethylamine base. Same as l-phen.
Form the acyl halide, perform a friedel-crafts itnramolecular cyclatization, and reduce the ketone, 'n you'd have the stimulant 2-aminoindane. Perform the intramolecular halogenation of the 2-position and use this to cyclatize on the amine, however, and one would have dihydroindole-2-methanoic acid. No one knows what the fuck that shit does.
Reduce that, and you might have 2-methyldihydroindole... which is probably a stimulant as well, but no one knows really what the hell that shit does, either.
And then there's the a-methyl-aziridine. Everyone knows what the b-carbon aziridine does, and it kinda sucks... but there's reason to believe that the gamma-aziridine would be potentially more interesting.
'n I'm probably spelling aziridine wrong. Oh, the amide remains untested, as does the 2,3-diamine of amphetamine, all of which could be made from phenylalanine.
Don't make diphenylalanine anhydride or its derivatives, though, without further reduction, as it should be carcinogenic as fuck, possibly with other problems.

ever play spore? unless this large hadron collider kills us all in a firey implosion we will eventually become so technologically advanced that we terraform to another planet, with its own billions and billions of different flowers and minerals, it will be like a second periodical table that we can mix with our own earth chemicals to synth MEGA DRUGS and well all get high on super meth and dark maruijana and all our planets one government body will pump out billions of future dollars campaigning to stop the use of super meth and the super pigs will chase down the super dealers and we will all be just plain super

Re: Undiscovered drugs
When you look at the sheer number of chemical possibilities, you would have to also consiter what the brain can handel. There are many realms of the mind that have yet to be tampered with. Ex Salvinorin A and other salvia-like compunds. Chemically sure the possibilities are endless but your brain eventuallly has its limits.
Or maybe I could be totally wrong and new drugs could create new receptors in the brain. Highly unlikely though, maybe in the future?

When I'm high as shit I like to think of all the drugs that may or not be in space.
I know some crazy ass planet out there has some potent hallucinogens. That would be awesome.

Re: Undiscovered drugs
I wouldn't say theres too many undiscovered psychoactive plants (theres most likely some out there though) but God only knows how many compounds are just waiting to be discovered. LSD was discovered by shear coincidence. If Hoffman didn't accidentally ingest it he woulda never discovered its psychedelic properties.

You put DMT in, and you get 4-hydroxy-DMT out, and this is psilocin. It is as if the mushroom psyche didn't really care what it was working with, it was simply compelled to do its sacred duty to 4-hydroxylate any tryptamine it came across. It was observed that if you put N,N-diethyltryptamine (DET, not a material found in nature) into the growing process, the dutiful and ignorant enzymes would hydroxylate it to 4-hydroxy-N,N-diethyltryptamine (4-HO-DET) a potent drug also not known in nature. This is the title drug of this commentary. What a beautiful burr to thrust into the natural versus synthetic controversy. If a plant (a mushroom mycelium in this case) is given a man-made chemical, and this plant converts it, using its natural capabilities, into a product that had never before been known in nature, is that product natural? What is natural?
