| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Libertarians and Ralph Nader
Some background:
I'm a libertarian and I fully support Ron Paul and his campaign for liberty. Unfortunately he is no longer running for president and I don't much like Bob Barr. I have decided to now vote for Ralph Nader.
I was wondering, do other Libertarians generally like Nader? I mean, I don't think Nader is that far from being a libertarian really. Anyone else agree?

I'm going to vote for him. However, he's not really libertarian in ideology, he supports Universal Health care, social security, progressive taxes and other liberal economic positions. He's definitely radical and will stand up for individual rights on just about every issue. His view of those above things I mentioned are meant to help, not hurt the individual. He won't win but like Parallax always says Don't Blame me I voted for someone else. But, he is defintely anti-gun, guns aren't really an issue at all to me so I don't really care.
I like Nader more than Paul because he doesn't bring religion into views and wants to restore equality by ending exploitation.
Here's a pretty detailed account of his positions: http://www.ontheissues.org/Ralph_Nader.htm
http://www.votenader.org/issues/
Quote by Nader: [I think people] are overwhelmingly supportive of a binding none-of-the-above law. So if you don’t like who’s on the ballot, you can go down and vote for None of the Above in your voting precinct. If None of the Above wins more votes than any of the other candidates, it cancels that particular election, sends the candidates packing and orders, within thirty or forty-five days, a new election and new candidates
Isn't that what everyone in this forum has been bitching about all along? Ralph Nader's the shit.

His "campaign for liberty" that includes denying a woman's right to abortion?
Nader just wants to bring pressure to bear upon capitalists and their parties, especially the Democrats, to reform their image and grant a few concessions. Thats it. He seeks a kinder, gentler capitalism. Hes not a radical.

Re: Libertarians and Ralph Nader
OP is yet more proof that Ron Paul style libertarians are naive as fuck about politics. I remember when they were clamoring for a Paul/Nader ticket (and a Paul/Kucinich ticket) when the "rEVOLution" was in full effect. That would have been pretty fun to see, a 19th century extreme right wing libertarian prez with a stridently anti-corporate-capitalist, pro-regulating-the-shit-out-of-everything VP. We may have seen the first-ever presidential fistfight.
I don't think these people even know what they're supporting, they just want to vote for a rogue candidate.

this.
don't worry about what "libertarians" want or what "liberals" want or whatever, decide what you want in a candidate and decide it for yourself and make your decision based on that. but seriously ralph nader is about as un-libertarian as you can get.

Re: Libertarians and Ralph Nader
No, I will not vote for Ralph Nader. I consider myself somewhat of a Libertarian, I support them on social issues, but my economic stance is more right-center rather than far right. I'm really torn this election because I really don't like what either candidate is doing.

Why do you dislike Barr? I didn't think his ideas were all that different from Paul's, he just lacks the personaltity cult.

Re: Libertarians and Ralph Nader
Nader is such a sham. Where the hell is he between the 4 years of each Presidential campaign? He only shows himself to the public every 4 years. Why doesn't he help people like him get into Congress and make a real change by stopping all the crappy legislation big industries are paying for? Sure a President is in the position to veto such legislation. But what makes him think by his past failures that he would not fail this time?

and the fact that he was pretty much your standard run of the mill republican for about 12 years, so if your a libertarian (i.e. people who are voting for him) you should think that he got some splainin' to do.
