| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

It's time for slave reparations
By the end of the American Civil War, over one million slaves -- valued at about two billion 1860 dollars -- were taken from their owners by the United States federal government. To this day, neither the owners of these slaves nor their descendants have received any form of financial compensation for this mass expropriation by the government. It is time for the descendants of slave owners to be compensated -- with interest -- for their ancestor's loss of property.

Re: It's time for slave reparations
The government did not take anything from them that could be put into the treasury. That "value" doesn't exist anywhere. It's not like the government taking land or assets and reusing it or selling it off. You're taking imaginary money that doesn't exist and printing it out from the fed. Great idea, push the fed and their huge profit business :/

It's cool. The money will come from taxing the industries built on the backs of freed slaves. So basically, we get our money back from the government taking away our farm equipment, and the farm equipment is the one paying it.
Win-win.

Re: It's time for slave reparations
Regardless where the money comes from, it doesn't work. After the war, they were no longer defined as property. They were simply people with labor to sell or to not sell, voluntarily - as per capitalism.

Yes, that's the point.
This thread is all about how the government should compensate the owners of said farm equipment (or the descendants of the owners) for the loss of their farm equipment due to the government abolishing said farm equipment's status as farm equipment.

I, also, would actually like to see some action on this issue.

Greeks were enslaved by the Ottoman Turks for 400 years, you don't hear them bitching about reparations..

Re: It's time for slave reparations
Why the fuck should the black kids who go to my school, some of which have parents that make much more than mine, get money for something that happened 200 years ago? And not all Black people are descended from slaves, but every black person would try to get one of those checks.
But I have a better idea. Instead of rewarding people for being born, why don't we invest in the Black youth? Why don't we put money into inner city schools, making it so that they can at the very least compete with the rich? Why don't we give them real financial aid for college and graduate school so that they can become professionals?

Read my thread. I was talking about reparations for slave owners, not low-quality farm equipment.

Might as well put money into giving scholarships to great apes, at least they're somewhat endangered.
