Default Firefox Flash plugin/pidgin Problem.

Recently strange things have been happening on my ubuntu box. Basically when I am serving the web, whilst having pidgin running, firefox seems to crash all the time.

This normally happens only when I'm viewing youtube/flash videos, so Im assuming it has something to do with the firefox flash plugin. But just now, I was using pidgin, whilst watching a flash video and my sound stopped working for awhile and then pidgin crashed.

I'm trying to figured out what's going on. Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else.

Yeah, this is a specific issue.
I never did figure out what was causing all the problems.
I think I personally pinned it down to a few things:

1) network card driver (check for an update)
2) the program and its dependencies

Firefox has had some updates to it. You're not the first person to experience this issue. Maybe try using seamonkey if you keep having issues. I changed to Debian, and I haven't been having that issue; but Debian uses a more free / open-source mock of Firefox called Iceweasel. Hence the fire vs. ice thing.

I don't know. That issue seems Ubuntu specific.
I think it is those two things, though.

Yea I've been trying to figure out what's causing it. It's pissing me off. It has to be something to do with the flash plugin. I guess i'll just have to hang tight for now.

Are you using the non-free Adobe plugin, the free Gnash plugin, or the free swfdec plugin?

IME Gnash is the most stable, but will also occasionally bloat and need to be killed. They all use massive amounts of processor decoding the video in firefox, so I just download it with UnPlug and then use Totem/VLC to watch it.

Yea I use the non-free flash plugin. It works for awhile, then after watching about 8- 10 videos, it will just lock up and I'll have to kill firefox and after that it will work again for another 8-10 videos. It's not really that much of a problem as I don't watch as many videos on sites like youtube as i use to. But still somebody should solve this shit.

It seems only to be sites like youtube though, I heard they use on the fly conversion software, which converts certain file formats to be viewed in flash player.

But on sites like newgrounds, flash works perfectly fine and it never once locked whilst viewing a flash movie on there.

Hmm I shall continue my exploration.

Use swfdec, it's great with YouTube. Still hogs CPU, but that's flash's fault.
