Stop explorer from starting on login
i would like to stop explorer.exe from starting on login and make Task Manager or command prompt start in its stead. How would i go about doingthis?
I tried disabling explorer in autoruns, and couldn't find it in msconfig.
and i don't know where to start for forcing other files to run on login
Much thanks,

Re: Stop explorer from starting on login
I think that is not possible, since command prompt and Task Manager are part of Windows and explorer.exe needs to be allowed to run as part of the windows OS..............
So yea. That is not really possible to do.

Re: Stop explorer from starting on login
but you can end the explorer process, so why would it be required?

Re: Stop explorer from starting on login
Run 'regedit' from commandline (or the Start -> Run box) and find explorer.exe then disable it from autostart.

Re: Stop explorer from starting on login
Here's what to do: - Windows key + R, regedit, Enter
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon
- Edit the Shell string to cmd.exe or taskmgr.exe
- Close regedit.
- Log out.
- Log back in.
- Different shell.
If you want to change it for JUST yourself and not every other user, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER (instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and add the Shell string manually in the same path.

You want TrayModule then. Make your startup shell a batch file that first runs TrayModule followed by PowerShell and Steam or whatever else you want.
Code:
@echo off
start /b "" "c:\program files\traymodule.exe"
start /b "" "c:\windows\powershell\powershell.exe"
start /b "" "c:\program files\valve\steam\steam.exe"
Just adjust the above paths to whatever the correct location is.

Replace the shell with a less shitty one? I know that with bb4win, you can replace the shell and still not have any taskbars visible so it'd still give you a perfectly "clean" desktop, but still able to access things with just a right click of your mouse on the desktop.

Re: Stop explorer from starting on login
I decided to switch to Alcohol 52% from Daemon Tools lite, and all works now. I am not using a task bar at all, I am running all my boot programs with a bat file. Thanks Vorpal for the idea.

Incorrect. Your assumptions are not true.
Simply create a batch file coded to end explorer.exe on boot
