| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Canadian Election Called for October 14
"Canadians will head to the polls in a general election on Oct. 14, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday in Ottawa after meeting with the Governor General."
My prediction is the Conservatives will win a majority, with the NDP forming the official opposistion, as the Liberals have chosen a leader witth zero appeal outside of Quebec.
What are your thoughts, totse?

Re: Canadian Election Called for October 14
If Harper doesn't do anything stupid, he can get his majority. I think he's smart, both intellectually and politically, organized, and well financed. However, I think the old Liberal line about him having a hidden agenda is still in the back of people's minds. Of course, he'll do well in the West and rural Ontario, but he needs to make breakthroughs in Quebec. He has been trying to buy them off over the past three years, but a lot of them don't like him in the first place, and he's cut a bunch of arts funding. But then again, whom else could they vote for? The Bloc? The Bloc has not been doing well at all. And they hate Dion.
I'm really not sure the NDP could form the Opposition. I mean... it's possible, but it would be crazy. Probably the craziest thing since the Bloc formed the Opposition in 1993. But you could really be right: Dion is no politician, and he struggles a lot with his English. So did Chretien, but Chretien was an old street fighter, whereas Dion is an old ivory tower man. So the Liberals could easily completely flop.
Edit: I'm just looking at the current numbers, and why don't you think the Bloc could form the Opposition if the Liberals totally flop? They've always gotten more seats than the NDP.

Re: Canadian Election Called for October 14
As much as I hate to see it, it looks like Harper will win a majority.
Our elections these days are pretty sad.
Stephen Harper is just a tool, and creepy and I don't like conservatives in general.
Because I hate Dion, he is a fucking idiot.
NDP and Green, pfffft.
So I guess I may as well just vote for the Bloc.
That way, I could vote and not feel responsable when everyone else fucks up the country.

No, they only have candidates in Quebec. Which is why a lot of people say it's retarded for them to be calling themselves a federal party.

Re: Canadian Election Called for October 14
I have no idea why Dion was elected. It's pretty fucked up. The Liberals had a stranglehold on the nation, and then internal fighting with that fatboy Paul Martin screwed the party over.
I hope we have another minority government, I don't like the agendas of any of the parties so it'd be good to halt things.

Exactly. Why are they at the English debates and not the Green Party? I mean the Green Party has candidates in every riding.
