Re: Health effects of distilled water
water is water.
though distilled has little air dissolved in it so people might find it flat tasting, a bit like boiled water. apart from that, its got no flouride added to it (though most bottled water hasnt got it anyway)
you should be fine

Re: Health effects of distilled water
You miss out on all the trace minerals and nutrients if you're drinking distilled water, which isn't particularly brilliant.
If you're a stickler for bottled water get some spring water instead.

Don't attempt to boil distilled water, it won't, it'll just super-heat, explode and burn your face off.

Re: Health effects of distilled water
Drink Dasani. I used to work for a water purification company and Dasani is the best for you because they reverse osmosis the water and then add back the chlorides that you need like calcium and such, while at the same time being less than 50 ppm.
Aquifina is ok but 100% pure water which is less than 1 ppm is acidic and will give you heart burn. That being said it is way better than tap water.
NEVER drink tap water.
Do you know where tap water comes from? It comes directly from the lakes around your home. The only treatment it receives is a large dose of chlorine(which causes cancer) to kill any living organisms. Then most municipalities add floride which is also poisonous. Then there are hundreds of other chemicals that cause numerous diseases and cancers. The EPA puts out a list quarterly of the amounts of poison in your water supply.
There are even less restrictions on bottled water though. The thing you should look for is the ppm. More than 100 equals bad for you. Don't be fooled by "pure spring" water, it is usually worse for you than regular tap water. If you were to use a precipitator on the cheaper brands of bottled water it would turn it into a green/black sludge. I've seen it and no one in there right mind would drink it even though tons of people do because they can't see whats in it. Nestle bottled water is the worst for you.
One more thing; Brita water filters do nothing for the cleanliness of your water. It's just a charcol filter that removes odors. Unless your using a reverse osmosis system your still drinking dirty water.

i think thats only if you heat it in a smooth container. if you boil it in a minorly scratched pot or an old mug, it should provide enough nucleation sites for the bubbles

Re: Health effects of distilled water
disclaimer: I am a chemist and know what i am talking about.
Most bottled water is made by reverse osmosis. It essentially is a nice and easy way to remove everything from water so it is pure. We have a plant in my city that uses the system to purify sea water for the water supply, its not particulary groundbreaking. However, as someone said, pure water doesn't taste very nice, so companies add some salts. It's usually something like calcium carbonate along with a few others so they can put it on the label and it appears healthy.
Funny you should mention dansai, its a bit of a widely known tale in water purification circles. In the uk, all water was sourced from a tap in a factory. They preformed reverse osmosis, and then to make it even more "pure" they added bromides (a usual disinfectant). Due to the rest of the processing, the bromides were oxidised into bromates, which are known carcinogens. The company had to recall all bottles and redesign the process. it's fixed now, but ill leave the moral of the story up to you.
ppm means parts per million. in real terms, its milligrams per litre. this guy saying anything about 100 ppm being dangerous is a fool. its a unit of measurement, not an absolute scale of how good water is. obviously the lower the numbers the less salts are in the water, but that may have taste issues. a bottle of orange juice in my fridge has 95'000 ppm sugar, and that is perfectly safe (big numbers are scary huh?).
Most of your minerals come from your food, assuming you eat things that were once alive in the ground (or on it). You would want to drink a shitload of water (about twenty litres) to get your RDI of calcium from the tap.
water treatment is far more involved than adding chlorine and fluoride. I'd go into the process, but it varies so much from place to place, depending on the source. Anything from UV to reverse osmosis to some bacteria magic can be used to make the water safe, and i am almost positive any water cooperation will happily show you the process if you ask (or visit their website).
So, we have established that this guy was talking out of his arse. Id love to know what he is talking about when he mentions the sludge though, sounds like a bottled water salesman trick.
Distilled water is fine for you. There is an old wives tale that says if you drink distilled water your cells with lyse and you'll explode. Its false, you can drink it to your hearts content, the chemical difference between distilled water and normal tap water is usually so tiny that there is no effect.
The boiling thing is half right. the water gets superheated because the bubbles that usually form have no surface to form on. They don't just form in the middle of the liquid, they need a (usually) solid. While pure water presumably has less dissolved solids, they are not really enough to nucleate the bubbles. manticore got it completely right, any container with imperfections will do the job nicely, but any "exploding" cups are down to the cup and not the water.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with tap water. Some places have unpleasant tasting or smelling water, but that is usually done as a last resort to make it safe to drink. It does depend very much on your location, in the world and also down to your suburb. Different water sources have different qualities, and its rare for an entire city to get all its water from one exact spot. Bottled water is counted as a food (at least in australia) and as such is under all the same guidelines. They may be able to sell you water out of the tap for two thousand times the price, but they can't kill you with it.

Uh... people. Water, even bottled waters with relatively high content of minerals (And no, not VITAMINS...) have very LOW levels of minerals. So low they have almost no effect on your diet.
There is nothing wrong with drinking distilled water. Distilled water is not 'nothing', its WATER. Water is good to drink no matter whether its distilled, or Evian.
Its recommended that EVERYONE drinks a gallon of water a day. This doesn't mean drinking necessarily eight glasses of WATER a day, as we get water from other things. But if you drink that much water, it will improve your overall health tremendously.
People seem to forget these days that water does not comes with 100% of a thousand different nutrients in it. That shit is added in Vitamin Water and other similar drinks.
And btw...
