I've never really used fedora, but possibly you don't have the updates repository enabled?

Okay, you're probably doing it wrong (my advice was also wrong). Apparently you have to enable auto-updating. This page on the fedora documentation has all your answers.

Note: I have no experience with Fedora. At all. However, that's likely the right answer, and I found it just by googling.

i was unable to update through yum update
i had disabled automatic updates.

but when i ran update through gnome it worked with ~900 updates
so now i'm unsure why yum update did nothing.

I dissabled the rawhide repositories and the testing repositories, then uninstalled the xine-libs and xine related packages and libdvdcss, then ran an update. it went smoothly then i installed the programs which i had removed.

All is running fine now.

just thought i would give an update.

Seems as the main problems w/ updating fedora are related to the totem-xine and other media players dependency issues.
