Art and Design If you like it, is it Art? What is the difference between a good design, a bad design and bad taste? Does form follow function? If something works, does it matter what it looks like?

Smile My First Oil Painting!!!!

Hey Totse! haven't posted any artwork in a while since I've been going through some problems but I have once again started and bought a twenty pack of some cheap oils. I had never tried this medium before but now that I have begun to experiment with it I am really enjoying it. It feels really good to start painting again after a while and will keep posting new paintings as I finish them. I am going to live in Peru for the next few months and am currently in rehab due to my family finding out about my extensive drug use. I am doing it for my family, because I highly doubt it will help me at all. I'm off hard drugs but now am beginning to drink more often. I've also been given benzos and SSRIs for now. All I'm doing now is focusing on perfecting my skills in graphic design and traditional art. So here I present to you my very first oil painting. Please comment and critique me on whatever you think I should work on. peace &T

I like it , especially the background colors, although I'm not big on the religious imagery I still like your technique.

Thanks, I don't belong to any particular religion but I do very much enjoy looking through old religious paintings, they've been an inspiration to me for this first piece. The characters actually represent a part of me. The woman represents a mother appearing desolate and turned away from the black sheep, which has lost its way, without realizing it, his heart has grown colder and darker with time. She has little hope for him and has turned instead to the younger child for consolation.
The child represents the younger brother, in which his eyes remain closed because he still cannot see how his older sibling has betrayed him and his mother. The lines in the background represent a form of despair, and adversities they have all gone through and still keep going through up until today. Some lines of course are bright and colorful since there are always small crumbs of joy in life but much of the painting has the under layered colors of hatred, afflictions, and unsatisfied urges that loom at the moment.

Great job man it looks really good. I love your explanation of the imagery. Not just some piece of shit the artist thought looked cool.

I like it. I've fucked around a bit with acrylics. Want to try out oils and that, but have no cash what so ever. How'd you like them? I guess you would also be the person to ask since you just started using them, any problems or tips you would be able to warn me about? Thanks

Thanks, and yea, when you do get money, definitely get yourself a set of oil colors, even if its a cheap brand. If you've used acrylics before IMO, I think you will have an advantage in using oils. When buying the pigments also buy yourself some bristle brushes and mediums such as turpentine and linseed oil as well as linen canvases. The mixing of the mediums is really trial and error.

Painting in oils is painting in layers, you should draw a rough sketch of your painting and make the first layer with very thinned paint using turpentine. This is done usually to set the tone of the painting. You will now build up using layers adding more and more details as you put down each layer. Also have a rag or a palette knife handy for fuck ups or to wipe off unwanted paint. The first layer will probably dry very quickly but once you add less turpentine and more pigment and linseed oil you will find that it may take a couple hours or even days before the paint is somewhat dry. I usually paint the rest of the layers in 50/50 turpentine/oil. Also try working in a ventilated area, since the paint mediums have a strong odor and can be harmful. I started with the first layers being the darkest, adding lighter colors and details at the final layers.

Be Patient, if you enjoy it, I suggest buying a couple canvases and work on different paintings while waiting for others to dry. I'm working on a couple myself that I will probably post in the next few days/weeks. I really enjoy using oils and have started taking a beginner's class that meets once a week on Saturdays. This week I believe there will be some kind of outdoor art festival and we will be painting outdoors, I'm already overly fucking
excited and will probably arrive there very drunk and will finish a painting that is coming out quite nicely. I will probably post it this weekend actually, o fuck this ima go paint right now peace nigga......
