I'll bet it's tough keeping up with all the laws when you're a cop, but these seem like cases of just making shit up on the spot. I guess their job is really more "keeping the peace" than "upholding the law".

Cops can arrest you for walking down the street with no clear goal or destination. It's called Mopery.

Basically, you can be arrested for whatever a cop decides is worth arresting you over. And apparently they really, really don't like to quibble over the finer points of the law. Even in cases where charges have been thrown out after the fact for gross misuse of power or improper process, I don't think I've ever seen a cop just let someone out of cuffs or the back seat of a cop car just because someone proved to them that the "perp" didn't do anything.

Like I said, "keeping the peace" over "upholding the law", which I guess you can make an argument for, but it's a lot harder to hear that argument with a cop standing on your face.

I think if the man owned a donut shop, the situation would have ended quite differently.

Perhaps that was his crime: owning an entire shop dedicated to bagels. I actually kind of see the cops' side now.
