| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Campus Network
I have heard from several people that it is possible for a person to see the activity of everyone else on the entire campus network. (downloads, pages visited etc)
How can i do this and, more importantly, how can i keep my activities anonymous?

Re: Campus Network
Only the administrator can see this. You will be limited to what's on a given wireless network or subnet.
Basically, the best way to stay anonymous is to just tunnel everything out through SSH. Everything. This isn't real anonymity, but it's anonymity as far as you're concerned. You can also use Tor, setting the FascistFirewall value to whatever's needed.

Well, the thing is, he wasn't asking for anonymity. He was asking for immunity from snooping sysadmins. So I gave him his answer, and reminded him that it wasn't really anonymity, just a very watered-down sense of it.
I didn't mean to sound "That's all you get, peon". I'm just terse, and I come off as hostile a lot.

Not true, only the administrator account (which conveniently fell into my hands last year)- so I got to see everything happening on my school network, yet I was not administrator.
But I know what you mean. Either way it was awfully boring, I just banned some accounts with rap music. (However I was tempted to switch up the printer locations...)

post reserved for a future answer (it's a long one and I don't want to half-ass it).
