Anxiety Meds
Okay tomorrow I am going to my doctor because I am starting a new job soon and I am afraid of having anxiety attacks at work. I have tried SSRIs and "Buspar (bullshit)" which I know don't work, except he doesn't know I was on them because I was living in a diff town for a while.
I want to get a supply of I guess Benzos that I can pop if things get too screwed up in my head.
Can any of you tell me the best way of telling the doc this without it seeming like "drug seeking behavior"?
Thanks.

Re: Anxiety Meds
All it takes is to do some research an look up the symptoms of anxiety. You will prolly go through several perscriptions till you finally get what you want. The worst thing you can do is ask for anything, showing any knowledged towards medications, or just acting desperate in general.

Re: Anxiety Meds
I dont see a problem with taking them preemptively. I have anxiety problems, and If i wake up and feel like the day might suck, I just take one or two, on .5mg youre still 100% functional.
edit:
Oh, i didnt really answer shit to do with your thread. Sorrybout that. wasnt thinking
edit:2
I'm actually going to be looking for my own perscription, right now I just use my moms. Would it be a bad idea to tell him that she gave me one or two to help with the issue, and then describe what happens, and say that xanax does help me?

Thanks for the advice. I will make sure to keep this in mind. I will merely tell him what I have tried and it's ineffectiveness. Hopefully he will give me something useful, not some bullshit.

Re: Anxiety Meds
well at least tell him you will refuse taking anti-depressants. tell him your past experiences with them, and its alright to up the bullshit a bit..
then say buspar didnt work....theres not really any other option unless hes gonnna get desperate and suggest lyrica or an anti-seizure med, so i would say hed probably be clinically forced to prescribe you a benzo

just say that you keep having episodes of severe anxiety (he'll be like oh you mean panic attacks, and you say yeah, i guess so. act like youre really ignorant about it and you wont seem like youre trying to get drugs.).
just tell him you think of work and start sweating, feel extremely nauseas, feel scared whatever.
it may sound dumb but if you seem really innocent he wont suspect you of just wanting drugs. sorry if none of that was helpful. let us know how it goes though

Re: Anxiety Meds
Okay I went to the doctor and acted stupid and docile. I acted like I thought the doctor was god (doctors like that shit). I pretended do know very little of drugs, but I told him the previous drugs I was prescribed.
He gave me a prescription for Ativan .5mgs. He said to take 1 and let it dissolve under tongue.
Any of you have experience with Ativan? Do you think one will be enough to calm panic? I am not looking to getting fucked up, I just want to deal with some of the inevitable anxiety and possible panic attacks when I start work.

Ativan is prescribed mainly as an anxiolytic, so if you're just taking them to relieve panic attacks (and not get fucked up), it should do the job pretty well. Don't know about dosages but if one tab doesn't do the trick, just take another and you'll be set.

Re: Anxiety Meds
If you just want panic attack control for legitimate purposes in the workplace Ativan is a fine choice. It's fast-acting and doesn't last a ridiculously long amount of time, making it one of the ideal benzos for short-term, high-level anxiety.
0.5 mg is low, but a common starting ground. They like to see how you tolerate it first, of course. For medicinal purposes, though, and with no tolerance issues, you probably will notice some sort of an effect from that dosage; hell, might even be all you need, for all I know. Give it a shot, and if you don't feel it's cutting it, try a whirl at two at a time during one of your attacks and see if that's any better.
Going back to the doctor at your next appointment and being honest about it not doing the trick (if it doesn't) isn't going to be automatically looked upon as drug-seeking behavior. He knows it's a low dose, and if you express to him that it at least had some effect, then he'll be assured your body can tolerate the drug and will likely consider a bump to 1 mg.

Re: Anxiety Meds
They may prescribe you something called propranolol, a beta blocker. I have panic attacks and even though it isn't a "fun" drug it does a good job of keeping my adrenaline under control - I've also used valium and klonopin for my attacks and those work well too.

Beta blockers only help with the physical aspects of anxiety- sweats, chest pains, tension, etc. It won't really have an effect on the psychological aspect of whatever is causing anxiety (considering all anxiety is psychological, duh) but it certainly may make the attacks a little more bearable by getting rid of the things I mentioned as well as other stuff.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if there is anything I can do to increase the effects of a 0.5 dose? I believe "potentiator" is the word.
I'd like to conserve the pill supply but also reap the maximum benefits.

Re: Anxiety Meds
IME propanalol is only good for anxiety if its like stage fright or something like that where you cant be sweating.
i believe it treats somatic (not sure if thats the right word) anxiety, but not the worry or mind part.
.5 mgs ativan will probably be pretty helpful because it sounds like your panic attacks are on the lower end of the spectrum.

Try Tagamet or white grapefruit juice.
