He will have a hard time getting published not because of the liability issue, but rather that AIM conversations can be boring as fuck to read.
PostSecret is successful in part because it's quick and easy to read as well as being colorful/creative.
What you're doing is sucking all of the fun out of anonymous secrets by condensing it to a few lines of black/white text.
... that being said.....
What you could start is a place for people on the internet to send you IMs - secrets, humor, whatever - and post it similiar to postsecret.com. Do it as a blog first and see what the response is. You'd be doing two things that PostSecret can't:
1.) Increasing accessbility - since postsecret recieves a ton of mail a day, not everyone's makes the cut. You have to be selective as well, but you're more accessible than he is.
2.) Providing people with a way of contacting the original poster - Posting someone's screenname may not go well, so you could have an email forwarding similiar to craigslist that still allows for anonymity. This lets people with similiar issues or thoughts to get together and communicate.
Maybe you could have whatever AIM screen name or email address forward 1 of every 10 messages sent to you put onto sidebar on the website. Like the internet's very own writing on the bathroom wall.
Sounds like a fun social experiment.
