How to make movie theater style popcorn.
Swiped from here.
Orville Redenbacher, be damned!
Quote:
3 tablespoons coconut oil (it's available in most natural foods stores)
1/2 cup white or yellow popcorn kernels
3 tablespoons clarified butter
1 teaspoon powdered salt (see note)
In a heavy pot or stovetop popcorn popper, melt the coconut oil over low heat. Add the popcorn kernels and spread evenly over the bottom of the pot.
Cover the pot, leaving the lid slightly ajar, and increase heat to medium. Gently shake pan back and forth over heat until the kernels stop popping, about 3 to 4 minutes.
Remove from heat, uncover and let the popcorn sit for 1 minute.
Meanwhile, melt the butter in the microwave.
Transfer the popcorn to a large bowl. Drizzle the butter over it, then sprinkle with salt. Use two large spoons to gently toss the popcorn to coat evenly with butter and salt. Serve immediately.
Note: Movie theaters use powdered salt, which resembles all-purpose flour. This salt can be purchased, or easily made by running table salt through a blender,
clean coffee grinder or mortar and pestle.

I'm about to complete this task and pop Enemy at the Gates into the DVD player.
That movie rocks. So does theater popcorn.

Its truckloads of butter. I wouldn't try the recipe as I have no popcorn maker. Orville Redenbacher microwavable is good for me.

Re: How to make movie theater style popcorn.
I used to work in a movie theater. We used Orville Redenbauchers.
The only difference between popcorn at home and some at the theater is that they use a shit load of butter and have a very large popcorn machine.
I don't think we ever used any coconut oil.....we might have though. Like most movie theater employees I was stoned the entire time I was employed so my memory is a bit hazey.

Re: How to make movie theater style popcorn.
This is a great find, but I like microwavable popcorn better.
Theatre popcorn is kinda nasty.

See, we never used butter at all. But we did use an assload of coconut oil, and then sugar or industrial salt.

a friend of mine works at hoyts (a major cinema chain in australia) and she told me how they've recently changed things and they no longer make the popcorn on the premises, it's brought in and just warmed!

Re: How to make movie theater style popcorn.
i dont have a popcorn maker, but i use a cast iron pan, a lid and a little oil. popcorn expands to about 20 times their size.
1) oil the pan
2)heat it up
3)throw in 3 kernels.
4)once 2 of them pop, throw the rest in and cover with a lid.
5) shake them around every 30 seconds or so.
6)once they start subsiding, pour the top layer in a bowl and cook the rest

Re: How to make movie theater style popcorn.
I just throw a bag of popcorn in the microwave (extra butter kind)
And then I put about 1.5 tablespoons of butter in a small glass cup (with a handle) and I put that in the microwave for 20 seconds so it melts and then boils the butter.
I then pour the popcorn into a big bowl and then drizzle about half the butter over the top of the popcorn and then using the side of the bowl and momentum/gravity, I flip the popcorn around in the bowl so the popcorn on the bottom is now on top, I then drizzle the rest of the butter ontop of it, then I grab REGULAR TABLE SALT (anything else WILL NOT WORK, Johny's popcorn salt is NASTY) and lightly sprinkle it over the popcorn.
I swear to god, its BETTER than movie-theater popcorn.
