Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Here's a nice trick. Open up notepad, calculator or whatever (gotta be in windows, which I assume your school uses).

Go to help>help topics

Right click on the title bar at the top and go to jump URL

Type in a web address, it must include http://www.site.com the http:// is important

You now have a small browser to do whatever you want and it's typically not blocked by most schools.

Well, most sites are blocked at my work, we use a few differnt ways to bypass that...

a secure proxy - currently I use https:\\www.hulk.org

Or, cached google search pages since google works.

Depending on the web page and software etc, using https instead of http will sometimes get around site's that have been blocked where they put in an entry like this:
http://www.blockedsite.com/
Instead of
*.blockedsite.com/

And it should get around content blockers too, but it must be a site which supports SSL such as totse

There are many different ways, you can ping the website to find out an IP address (this requires a cmd though).

I just use server341.kproxy.com

And you're at school, learn something.

Tomorrow I'm planning on building a home server exactly for this purpose. It's gonna host it's own circumventor proxy so I can get past the school firewall (SonicWall). If it get's blocked, I'll just change it!

My school got clever last year and blocked https to most sites, so finding a proxy is very difficult. If I am correct, using the circumventor should get me to totse without totse refusing the connection after a few minutes.
