Default Getting clean and staying that way.

I have been addicted to opiates for around 5 years. All of my attempts to kick my habit have failed after only a few days. Rehab also didn't work for me, and I was using again shortly after completing my program.

What methods have you used to help you quit? Are there any activities that helped you stay sober? Any other tips/suggestions? I don't want to be a slave to the drug any longer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am especially looking for non-drug related activities that would help occupy my time and keep my mind off of drugs.

I got clean, and I've been that way for a year and a half. I didn't go to rehab, but as soon as I detoxed, I started going to all kinds of 12 step meetings. That way you can become friends with other people who aren't using and have a desire to stay clean. I also see a counselor for relapse prevention. That's helped so far.

Google Alcoholics Anonymous meeting finder. You should find your answer pretty easy.

As for activities to keep you sober, martial arts will work wonders if that's your cup of tea. They can train you mentally and physically if you find one that isn't a Mcdojo.

I would pretty much recommend any type of physical activity though. Go for a hike. Explore. Get your knees dirty. Get that natural high.

Oh and if you really want to stay sober, then I suggest you find some new friends with similar interests. It's hard to stay clean when you go to your homeys house and all they do is more drugs.

Good luck.

SCREW METHADONE!

If it's opiates you have a problem with, go to www.Suboxone.com and read about it, then go to http://www.addictionsurvivors.org/vb...splay.php?f=47 and join the forum/search for a doctor in your area.

The only way this is going to work is IF YOU WANT IT TO! ONLY IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT GETTING AND STAYING CLEAN!

Take care and be safe!

PS: If you have any questions about Suboxone, let me know, I have plenty of experience with it and am still on BMT (Buprenorphine Maintenance Therapy) successfully sober!

I smoked heroin for 15 years. I haven't touched it for almost 3 years now.

True I am now taking morphine every day. But I was off the heroin for a little over a year before I went on the morphine.

The main thing about quitting is that you'll never be successful until you want to quit. I don't mean need and I don't mean others want you to quit. I mean that you're finally fed up and ready to be done with it.

Something else that helped me was to get the fuck out of Oakland and the Bay Area. To where it takes 1 to 2 hours one way to go where it is.

It may seem like a lot of trouble, but it's not as much trouble - and cost - of a habit.

Go there and find a meeting. I've never been addicted to ope's although I was once a very heavy meth user for about 4 years and I ended up going to rehab and NA for a year. Rehab was gay but it got me through the beginning part, and once I found an NA meeting that was right for me NA was actually pretty cool. No matter what method you want to try to kick your habit, it's not all up to the method. The majority of it is going to have to come from YOU, and the programs will guide you along and make it a little bit easier on you. That is, if you do it right. If you're going in sour and with a closed mind all pissed off just tapping your feet and staring at the clock waiting to get out, you're just wasting your time.

You have to LISTEN and have an OPEN MIND. Remember when you first got curious about drugs and the drug culture and even though your parents and teachers and other important people that have authority and/or love you all told you how awful drugs are, but you didn't listen, read up a little bit, talked to some people, and found out that while drugs may not be the safest, most healthy, the best route to take, and come with many serious risks that it is still very possible to live a productive and happy life as a user as long as you take the proper precautions? You had an open mind. You didn't listen to the hearsay, the rumor mill, the peanut factory, or the propaganda. You wanted to think for yourself and find out the truth and take some risks and see if drug use and drug culture was something that you would enjoy being a part of. You kept your mind wide open to all the possibilities, perceptions, beliefs, stand points, and so on.

Now you have to re-direct that mindset towards getting off habitual drug abuse, rather than towards recreational drug use. It's not THAT different, is it? Just go to some meetings. You may not like the first one, or first few, that you find and attend. But trust me, every meeting is different. There's one for every type of person. Find the one that's right for you, park your butt towards the front, shut up, and fucking LISTEN. Then what you need to do is talk to the other people there before and/or after the meeting or during the break if that particular meeting has breaks. You need to find a sponsor. If you're afraid to walk up to people, tell one of the meeting leader dudes up front that you're looking for a sponsor and maybe towards the end of the meeting they'll ask if anyone is taking sponsees. You'll be surprised at the hands raised, I'm sure. Then talk to them, get some phone numbers, and choose one to be your sponsor. He will then guide you from there. And as long as you truly want to quit and put in the effort, you'll get off the drugs and be on your way to a better life.

Dude listen to this guy he knows what he is talking about. Methadone is not a good drug to try and rehabilitate with, trust me I've been there, done that. I used to go to the methadone clinic but I just got even more addicted to methadone. I haven't gotten a dose from that hell hole in like 6 months and I'm glad I don't go to that place anymore. I now take Suboxone which has helped me so much I can't even stress that enough. After the methadone clinic I started using again and began that downward spiral to addiction. I was spending $150.00 a day on shit when I finally realized what I was doing to myself. So I started the suboxone treatment and I have been clean ever since. The thing is don't expect to get high off it like poeple do on methadone. You get a good buzz in the beganning but after a while it starts to go away. But the suboxone treatment is not about getting high, if you really want to quit trying to get high on sobo's is a sign that you are not ready to be sober.

If you don't have insurance by it on the street from people that do. Trust me its cheaper to buy sobo's from people that have insurance than to get a legit script without insurance.

Question Re: Getting clean and staying that way.

hrmm, you have another post in this forum talking about smoking oc's, then you want to say clean. hrmm... you gotta have that initiative to stay clean, or it just doesnt work, i've tried, made it three months or so sober, no pills, no shit, not even weed, and got bored, so i smoke, drink, pop pills occasionally, but don't mess around with the hard stuff anymore, and have periods of sobriety longer than a week nowadays. what got me to decide i dont need to be fucked up every day is hitting my bottom, where i massively od'ed, but i lived, if i wouldnt have od'ed at the time, i would have kept on doing what i was doing..... since then i havent touched any opiates, besides some poppy pods and norcos. you got to want it to make it. and its not easy, if it feels easy at first, its trickery.

edit: and yeah, meetings do help out, if you dont like the one you go to the first time, dont give up.

Ive been on H for nearly 2 years on and off, (but mainly on) and now Ive been clean for a month, which Is probably the longest Ive been off it since i started. I also feel that this time Il kick it for good.

After 2 years I realised that all my mates were moving on and If I ever wanted to achieve anything in life I need to get off H.

Its very tough, but try taking a look at your life, and the things youve been doing for the past 5 years. Then imagine you doing that for the rest of your life. Its a scary thought, but it could scare you into getting things back on track.

What treatment are you on? Methadone? or Suboxone?

Try taking Suboxone, because it stops the effects of opiates. YOu probably know tis already though.

Try taking up new hobbies and making a diary of things you want to get done each day/week.
Hang out with freinds that arent into 'the scene', and try to talk to them about it, if possible, if their good mates theyl understand and help you.

Maybe, if you totally cannot give up all together, set yourself targets, for example- "I'll go a week clean, and if I manage that il treat myself to a score"

Then if you can manage this make it 2 weeks, then a month. That may work.

I know how fucking hard it is, once your in too deep, but every time you get the urge to score, sit down, take a few minutes, and really think 'is this what I really want to do'. Try to think to yourself, Im better than this shitty drug.

Hope this has been at all helpful. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the replies. There was a lot of good advice in this thread that helped me out a bit. I was able to find some meetings in my area and plan on going to them next Thursday and Friday.

I have tried suboxone before but it made me horribly sick, so sadly it isn't something that is going to help me.

Do you know that you cannot use Suboxone within a 12-24 hour period of using H.

It will cause withdrawls. This could be the reason.

Hey Meta,

I'm guessing you're not getting the medicine prescribed for pain or anything since you're basically taking it to self medicate for pain too probably, but to stay away from the H as well, so basically you're own drug maintenance therapy plan haha.

If you are getting it from a doctor, then I wouldn't think you went and said "I'm addicted to H, Morphine will keep me off of it, please prescribe me it so I can lead a clean life!", probably more of a pain thing, but if you didn't get it from a doctor, I'm assuming someone who isn't you is getting it from a "doctor" am I correct?

Take care and be safe! Have a great Labor Day weekend!

I have tried suboxone before but it made me horribly sick, so sadly it isn't something that is going to help me.

Perhaps you were allergic to the Naloxone in the Suboxone. I would at least try and give it another shot, but try Subutex. Same active drug in both (Buprenorphine), but Subutex has no Naloxone in it.

There are A LOT of people out there (No percentage info available that I'm aware of) that are VERY SENSITIVE to the Naloxone is Suboxone, like myself for instance, even if I spit the shit out after I dissolve and hold it under my tongue a while, that Naloxone (100% bioavailable IV yes, but only 10% bioavailable orally so that shows how little it takes for one to get a reaction) that gets into my body is just enough to trigger a migraine. A lot of people report this as the most common side effect (Headaches), but it ranges anywhere from headaches, to swollen body parts, to vomitting, to just about anything else.

So please tell the doctor you went to for Suboxone the reaction you had and you want to stay clean so you want to try Subutex to see if it will make any difference at all, because the amount of people allergic or that get reactions to Buprenorphine alone are pretty much a very small number, like 1 in 100,000 if that, probably more.

So please at least try this, I can almost guarantee it was the Naloxone, as it was for me, because literally the day or two after I switched over to Subutex, there was no noticeable difference in anything but the disappearance of the side effects and headaches I was getting with Suboxone! It's DEFINITELY WORTH A TRY!

Take care and be safe! Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Yeah, that's exactly it. Actually it's because you didn't contribute anything to this thread. You just posted some smart ass remark which by the way I saw coming a mile away, I just didn't expect it to come from you.

I've seen you around alot these days and for a while you seemed to know your shit, the only problem is that your a raging asshole.

And FTR I haven't done shit or OC in a long time, just sobo's. And I don't withdrawal hard off those being that they are partial opioid agonists.

Meet new people and stop talking to the ones you are associating with now. Don't go to 12 step programs because then you are around other users and you need to go to people who aren't using.

Yeah, seriously lol. I see posts here about how people are so proud of themselves for transferring their addiction from an array of opiates to suboxone and they're all proud like they've actually kicked an addiction. How fucking pathetic. Have some self control people, Jesus. Clean is clean....clean isn't getting on suboxone.

yes I have been addicted. yes I did quit cold fucking turkey.
I constantly watch assholes trade one addiction for another and most of the time they end up back on the same shit they started on. DTs can kill in long time opiate users and even then it is fairly rare. OP is obviously not a long time serious junky. he could quit cold turkey. It would suck. He would think before the next time he did opiates.

and as far as buying suboxone off the street, its fucking retarded. if you think OP is gonna turn down H when it is right in front of him and he cant get suboxone, then you are the one who doesn't know shit about addiction. the best thing he can do is avoid the illicit drug market as to avoid temptation

yes I have been addicted. yes I did quit cold fucking turkey.

really, to what?

DTs can kill in long time opiate users and even then it is fairly rare.

actually, i was kinda hinting at benzo WDs causing death

and as far as buying suboxone off the street, its fucking retarded.

no, it really ist. if you have no insurace, its the better route to take.

if you think OP is gonna turn down H when it is right in front of him and he cant get suboxone, then you are the one who doesn't know shit about addiction.

if the guy is determined on quitting, and has been taking subs for awhile, he should have no problem waiting a few days, or finding another subox dealer. but only is he is truly determined too.

so in a nutshell fuck you

for what? pointing out flaws/stupidity in your post?

yeah it truly is possible for people to quick cold turkey. addiction is real and the length of its effect varies. but nevertheless, it doesn't last a life time if the addicted has a say. it depends on the person, really. if someone wants to stay a jackass the rest of their life, it's their choice.

dont get me wrong, i never meant that it wasnt. i just meant, depending on the drug, that it can be extremely hard, and in some cases nearly impossible. in the end, it comes down to willpower, but sometimes it just isnt enough

^that's what i forgot to add in my first sentence lol. then it's good to make a thought out plan on how to ween off with a doctor or some type of specialist. but yeah dude, benzo/alcohol/opiate withdrawals get real nasty.

learn to spell, and to think. street dealer+addict=bad
pretty simple

if he is truly determined too he doesnt need the subox, and if someone waves a bag of dope in his face he probably isnt going to say no

no, for being an idiot

does anyone else see the failure in having a junky scoring suboxone on the streets???

not if all he is buying is subox. if thats all he gets, does it really matter where its from? also, my spelling is fine for an internet forum, who cares if its perfect?

if he is truly determined too he doesnt need the subox, and if someone waves a bag of dope in his face he probably isnt going to say no

yes, but maybe he has enough willpower to use subox, but not enough to quit everything completly. wouldnt it still be better to go

opiate addiction>subox use>totally clean

than to

opiate addiction>nothing changes>death/still addicted

That is what the options are around here so thAT step in itself is to better yourself

So it is not a total failure

There is no detox methadone/ suboxone program to even attempt to get on outside of major citys and a hour some drive every day to the proper treatment facilities

as far as my addiction goes, toward the end I was snorting 80+ a day for at least a year, sometimes going much higher if I had access to it. There is also the time I spent working up to that (about another year or so).

and as hard as you might try to deny it sending a junky out to score anything is a bad idea man, too much temptation. If OP has to have the suboxone (he doesn't) he should get it legit even if it means paying more, its worth it to be out of the game.

but in the long run most people I have seen truly beat addiction have gone cold turkey. lock yourself up until you are done detoxing then join a support group and start getting healthy again.

methadone/suboxone are just different addictions.

he wants to get clean.

I wasnt making uninformed posts, I wasnt being a dick.

I was simply stating from experience what has worked and what I have seen work.

its too risky man, like I said I have seen more than one person try this and do alright for a while. then their guy doesn't have suboxone but he has H

at this point you have an opiate addict staring at a bag of junk with a dealer trying to talk him in to buying it.

It takes a whole lot more will power to say no in this situation than it does to lay in bed and man your way through your detox.

and after a proper bout of the DTs you think twice before putting yourself through that shit again.

Why would getting Suboxone off the street be considered a failure?

At least it shows your going in the right direction.

Its a shame the richest contry in the world cannot provide the medication its citizens require.

In the UK, my clinic provide Methadone, Subutex and Suboxone all for free at whatever dosages one requires.

I've seen you around alot these days and for a while you seemed to know your shit, the only problem is that your a raging asshole.

1. Not sure what you're referring to when you say I seemed to "know my shit", but I do like to believe I have a decent amount of smarts on the subject of psychopharmacology. You're probably just implying that because I don't agree with your opinion on something that I "don't know my shit", in which case, lulz on you.

2. I quite enjoy being a "raging asshole", and if I must accept that label whilst expressing my opinions in lieu of being fake for the sake of being some hunky-dory people-person, then so be it. If you're so sensitive about your problems in recovery that the 2 cents of some random jerk-off on the internet are enough to work you into some sort of temper tantrum, you need to get your priorities straightened.

fuck the clinic. it really comes to this easy question that you have to be brutally honest and blunt about. do you want to be clean?

first off, cold turkey even with a raging habit isn't going to give you DT's, it'll make you wish you had them instead...

second off, you've got to be a dumbshit to not try weening yourself down before detoxing. wtf do you think they try doing with methadone/suboxone? you just need an opiate and some willpower to want to be clean.

break your cell phone, loose your car keys, shack up a week, cut your ties with society and break on through to the otherside.

as far as weening yourself off, some people may have too. Others don't. I have seen more success with those that don't

tip: if your going to ween off dope, buy as much as you plan to need at once. this will keep you off the street, and kinda keep the purity realtively similar. last thing you need in a ween is a hot shot..

Suboxone is obviously not the only way to quit opiate dependency. Sure if you can quit cold turkey go ahead, but for the other 95% suboxone can help. Think about it this way, if you can buy antihistamines off the street for a cheaper price than getting a script, why go through a doctor?

Listen to me when I say this, when I get Sobo's off the street to me it's not really a "score". (I have plenty of connects to get dope but I choose to get Sobo's instead.) A score is getting something I actually enjoy and get really high off of. People if you've never done opiates or Suboxone stop acting like you know!

SUBOXONE DOESN'T GET YOU HIGH LIKE HEROIN OR OXYCONTIN.

I will share my personal experience with everyone which I normally don't do but if it can help someone in this thread I will.

To paint a better picture of who I am and my background I'm actually a pretty bright guy. I wouldn't consider myself a genius but I've always been really smart. I have always worked a steady job since I was 13 and I'm 22 now. I have been going to school part time for the past two years so most of my spare time is consumed in homework and research papers. I'm actually going to school for Human Services so I know a great deal about drug use, abuse, and dependency. My knowledge extends (about substance abuse) more than just personal experience and drug forums. I was always against hard drugs until I was about 20 years old. I started experimenting with other things but I never really liked any of them. They either fucked me up to much or I felt guilty doing them.

Until I experienced OC. Nothing in the drug world would satisfy as much as this drug did, and yes I know why and how the drugs make me feel that way. I took a year's worth of college studying the brain and how drugs effect it so I don't need some smart ass telling me why I like opiates so much. I never shot up in my life but I started to inhale them through my nose by crushing them up. And like any other sob story it went from one or twice a week to everyday. Do I blame anyone else for my addiction? Absolutely not! Actually when I learned about methadone treatment in school(A couple months before things got really bad, when I actually did decide to go and try the methadone clinic I only went for about three weeks. I felt like I was addicted to methadone even more than I was addicted to OC and I quit cold turkey off the methadone. It was torture and that is why I don't suggest it, I didn't sleep for like 4 days and I started hallucinating from lack of sleep and I felt SO depressed, worse than I have ever felt in my life.)I was totally against it. I basically thought it was just a way for the government to legally sell drugs to junkies as "treatment". In a way I still feel that way, and thats actually another reason why I don't have a script for Sobo's.

Suboxone is for people that really want to quit opiates. If you want to get high legally everyday then the methadone clinic is perfect for you. But I cannot stress enough that Sobo's don't get you high like heroin or OC's.

EVENTUALLY PATIENTS ARE TO WEEN OFF OF THE SUBOXONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S WHAT NO ONE IS UNDERSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES IF YOU TAKE SOBO'S FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE NOT QUITTING AND ARE JUST SWITCHING ONE ADDICTION TO ANOTHER.

BUT SWITCHING FROM HEROIN OR OC TO SOBO'S IS A BIG STEP IN RECOVERY.

The reason why many people are so against methadone or Sobo's is because they never ween their patients off. In my eyes (at least my local methadone clinic) they are corrupt money hungry ass holes that take advantage of peoples addictions.

But I will repeat, Suboxone is not meant to be taken FOREVER! Patients are supposed to ween off of the Suboxone. Their are also obvious safety reasons why doctors want patients to take a pharmaceutical as oppose to street dope.

I agree whole-heartedly on this viewpoint of the matter.

As a "middle man" between dope and sobriety, subs are great. It's the people who are still taking 8 mg a day a year or two after being clean that irk me.

I feel the same way about using diazepam to ween alcoholics off the hooch. Then again, I know plenty of assholes in A.A. who walk around with a chip on their shoulder trying to be subtle as they brag about having 20 years of sobriety while meanwhile they've got a 120 count of Valium 10s chilling in the console of their Chevy.

Yeah, but put it this way.

I was a complete piece of shit fuck up - all I ever did was shoot dope, and run around Pittsburgh trying to score, ripping people off, getting ripped off, being sick, shooting more dope, sick again etc, etc.

Suboxone - while yes, if you want to be a complete uppity prick about it, IS transferring your addiction - think of it this way.

Taking Suboxone not only keeps you clean - but it adds stability to your life. No more struggling to cop, no more being a hopeless junkie fuck up. You can wake up, take your dose, get a job - and get going with your life. That's the entire point. When you're good and ready, ween off. End of story.

Just my 2 cents.

When you're good and ready, ween off. End of story.

You've got a good and valid point in what you said, but as far as this part goes, there's way too many ex-junkies who don't think they're "good and ready" to get off subs when it's been more than six months or even a year since they stopped using.

The whole point of bupe is to prevent the person from being dope sick so they don't have to deal with cramps/nausea/sweating/insomnia/anxiety at the same time as they're fighting off a nasty psychological addiction to the shit. It's not for the psychological aspect; that's going to be with you for life. The physical aspects of withdrawal, though, aren't.

Even post-acute-withdrawal syndrome only lasts 18 months at the most after the last use, and that's completely psychological.

I mean, if someone's a non-functioning junkie and their only M.O. is to be able to get through their days without dope, then bupe will work great for them. I think the whole thing that bothers me is that there are a good amount of bupe patients who are honestly deluded by doctors and clinics into believing that bupe is for long-term usage.

I mean shit, you don't see any magic pills for crack/meth/benzo/alcohol/barbiturate addicts to swallow as a way to deal with everyday life in lieu of developing some healthy coping mechanisms and a support system; and they still get sober.

Thing is (and I guess it's only with this guy) the doctor I go to for Bupe. treatment is very adamant about going to therapy once a week, as well as several meetings.

Some people, he will not treat UNLESS they go to X amount of meetings a week (bringing in a signed paper by the NA secretary). I think he's actually got a pretty good idea going. I hated meetings, but once I was "forced" to go, they grew on me, and I'm now very comfortable with them - and they help me quite a bit.

I'm no doctor, and not that my opinion matters, but every Suboxone dr. should propose/enforce the idea of meetings and therapy. They help ease the psychological part of addiction, which, in my opinion is the worst.

Once again, just my opinion. Everyone's different. But I feel that meetings/therapy genuinely help.

When you're at that last stage of addiction hitting absolute rock bottom is the only way to truly get you to change (those who don't change are the ones you see pushing shopping carts filled with trash...Don't want that right).

Steps you can do that help, if you have someone you really love and care about and they feel the same for you that's willing to understand and help is boost. Not 1 of those 'i told you so' or 'why do you do that whats your problem'? Gotta avoid them, enviroment/surroundings change moving somewhere else big help. If you live in the city, that's the hardest to cope with just because of the energy and atmosphere cities have about them. If you have the true addictive personality its a psychological disease of your mind something that isn't curable but managable.

Something else I was told that helped keep them to stay clean whenever they got those urges was to look at how nice their life is now and how fucked it was back then and how truly addicting it is. Biggest mistake anyone makes who get those urges is they start thinking well I can handle atleast 1 hit or drink or whatever, if you cross that line you will be back to where you in the first place in a matter of weeks.

Most important, is that you really have to sit and ask yourself(in a sober mindstate) that you want to, need to and ready to make a change and you gotta be %100 can't be wishful thinking or have any doubt in your mind otherwise it will be a neverending circle. Doing those other steps I mentioned earlier only help some, it you that has to take complete control of your mind because there's always gonna be that little part that does the, come on just do it only 1 time what will it hurt.

Actually fuck all that I wrote like any of that will work, nothing is wrong with addiction as long as you can afford your habit and got cash to pay for it, only weenies quit.
