Default Can't find a program I installed on Ubuntu

Okay, I hope the thread title is more appropriate this time around

So here's what's going on. I downloaded lilypond onto my desktop. (its a music notation program). I changed the properties for lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh to allow me to execute it.

After that I was able to successfully (I think) install the program in the terminal. I found the file (/home/rev/lilypond) [rev is my username] However I can't seem to find a file that launches the program.

I checked all the sections in the application menu and it's not there. I tried to navigate the file system via terminal but to no avail (this is what's holding me back with my other problem)

So, is there a certain file extension I should be looking for like .exe for windows? I'm lost here.

I'm running ubuntu 7.04

MM

P.S.
For those that have been helping me with my other problem, I installed unrar however, I can't cd into the file containing the .rar I tried with the file on my desktop, then I tried moving it to my movies folder but I just can't get it to cd. I tried sudo too it just says: ...

Nevermind, I just noticed that the error message said: bash: cd: the: No such file or directory
When the file name was "the big chill" So I changed the file name to just "the" and it let me in! So now I know file names need to be one word to navigate in Terminal. See, I'm not hopeless. :P

Why are you running last year's OS?

I'm not sure if it's in the 7.04 repos, but lilypond and GTK interfaces to lilypond are in the repositories.

On Gnu, you don't spend ages googling for a program, only to download it and realize it's a virus and start over, and then go through some laborious setup process with "wizards" and "druids" and "knights" or whatever Windows has now. Gnu package installation is simple and magic-free! Each distro has (or points to another distro's) repositories, servers that hold packages. A package is anything that can be installed; GNOME or KDE themes, manuals, documentation, source code, libraries, or programs. These packages are installed with a package manager that allows a user to maintain a clean system with the ability to easily add or remove packages!

Ubuntu has four main interfaces to the package manager they use, which is also used by Debian and many other distros: Apt, the Advanced Package Tool. These are gnome-app-install (Applications>Add/Remove Programs), Synaptic (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager), aptitude (an ncurses-based package manager), and apt-get/apt-cache (command-line tools for installing, searching through, or removing packages).

I suggest using gnome-app-install or Synaptic to install lilypond, instead of doing it manually. This will allow you to easily remove lilypond if the time comes, and also allows lilypond to be updated in sync with future releases.

I did. And I found the place it's installed to, but there are no icons or anything anywhere.

use the program "which" or "whereis" to find where the binary is, but that'll just look on your path, so typing the name of the program typically works...

I think the program you installed was command-line only, there's a GTK frontend though.

1. open terminal

this is where it gets tricky mate.

2. type the name of the program into the terminal and press enter.

or try just typing lily and then hitting tab .. wow it finished the word for you.

I've been using Gnu/Linux since Red Hat 4. I know what I'm doing. The canonical way to locate a binary is the `which' or `whereis' utility. Like I said, those will both search your $PATH, so typing the name of the program (with tab-completion) will also work.

Don't try to play around like you're some hot shit, when you can't even type proper English. Idiot.

Damn, Prometheum. He typed up that response to you as if you were a child. I personally would not take that.
