| Art and Design If you like it, is it Art? What is the difference between a good design, a bad design and bad taste? Does form follow function? If something works, does it matter what it looks like? |

Stencils
Recently I've been getting into stencils.
I've done three so far.

The first one was Vader. I saw an image online, and stencilized it.

Second was for a shirt for a friend's birthday. It's an inside joke kinda. It's a little messy because I didn't adjust the stencil, but the shirt came out real nice.

Third is Stalin. Self-explanatory. I thought about making the text "Have You Seen This Man?" but went with Man Of Steel, partly because it's easier to do.

Re: Stencils
You did Vader backwards, and that doesn't look anything like Stalin...

Re: Stencils
I think the older Stalin with the thick mustache is more recognizable, although the young picture is interesting and the point of a stencil isnt always for universal recognition. Sometimes it's better people to see and wonder about it rather than recognize and forget. Maybe they'll think it's johnny depp and a promo for a new movie. Looks good so far . . .
Have you used any of them in public?

Re: Stencils
I haven't put any up in public yet, right now I'm just seeing what works well and whatnot. If I do something I really like, something original, I may put it up.
I plan on doing a multilayer piece soon.

I do recognize that the picture is Stalin. You'll notice I said "that doesn't look anything like Stalin." I was hinting at what you said - old Stalin is far more recognizable. It's even arguable the young Stalin represents a different persona than does old Stalin. It'd be similar to using a picture of Castro standing on the mound. That young Castro was not yet a dictator, so it seems a bit unfair to pin all the bad things that old Castro did on young Castro.

Re: Stencils
I did one of Bob Dobbs. It's big. Maybe three feet tall?
Problem is, it's made from some posters. The cutouts just flop all over. I'm going to get some of that fabric netting stuff to paste over it so it actually keeps its shape.
Still haven't done a multilayer piece. I need to find a suitable stencil medium, this poster shit's gotta go.

Re: Stencils
I have access to a CNC machine, and it is the best thing ever for making stencils. Oh my god! There is something satisfying about finishing a really big piece, if you cut it by hand.. but cutting it by hand fucking sucks really. Especially decently stiff material.
