Default ssh file transfer

I'm happy using scp to copy files around the place, but i'm already tired of having to look up my ip adress and type it in. This proves very difficult remotely.

Is there a nice (free) way to hook my ip up with an unchanging server name?

Assuming the machine is part of your lan:
You machine that runs sshd will need to have a static ip.
ifconfig (interface) inet (ipv4 address) netmask ( netmask ).
Interface is probably eth0 if the machine is running linux.

There is a file especially for the purpose of not having to type the whole ip address:
`man hosts`

EDIT: You could also set an alias in your shell rc.

A lot of routers have DNS servers on them. Set the clients to send a hostname (this differs based on client) and then just use the hostnames.

The alternative is static IP's and the usage of /etc/hosts, or running your own DNS server.

Or find a way to transfer the Dynamic IP to the client so that the client can adjust as needed.
Lynx and w3m along with some command cutting techniques allow a person to send the information to a server, during which the client can download the info and insert it into a script.

This is the kind of thing where shell scripting becomes handy.
If you don't know it, learn it.
