why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?
before anybody talks shit, i am not asking this for recreational purposes.im just trying to understand this
to my uneducated mind it seems simple, ssris prolong the time seratonin stays out in you (something like that) so why doesnt it make people who arent depressed happier? wouldnt it do the same to their seratonin?
i know this may sound completely retarded but could somebody please explain this?

Re: why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?
Maybe it's because normal people don't need the prolonged serotonin levels because any bits that die down are replaced relatively quickly, whereas in depressed people, they aren't replaced, so having them last longer would benefit the person.

it is my understanding that people who are depressed have the same amount of seratonin as anyone else. it's just their post-synaptic cell's ability to take up the seratonin that's fucked, and they therefore need the seratonin to be in the synapse longer to get recognized.
The post-synaptic cell can only take up a certain amount of seratonin, and in a healthy individual the seratonin is recognized in a normal fashion with regular (minimal) amounts and taken up so that the post-synaptic cell can make some magic.
So, it's not that the ssri's don't work on healthy people... there would be more seratonin in the synapse... it's just being wasted as it's not doing anything.

You first have to understand that SSRIs only work *slightly* better then placeabo in depressed people in the first place to answer your second question.

Bullshit. I know plenty of people they worked wonders on. Of course I know some for whome they don't work too.

I don't have time to link the scientific journals being this, but you are a bitch, seriously.
HA, the main moderater of a DRUG forum thinks that SSRIs are helpful for depression when blatant evidence and even mainstream reports (when even the media is saying how much even pharms are ineffective..you know that means something :) ) shows that they are not much better, if at all, then placebo.
And he bases his evidence off of "plenty of people they worked wonders on".
Idiot.

Idiot.
The scientific reports actually prove that SSRIs are about 3 times more effective than placebo. Responses are usually around 20% for placebo and 50-70% for SSRIs. With dosage adjustments this can be even higher.
Just because they work instantly on 100% of people doesn't mean they're useless. A lot of this "evidence" is from people who were too weak to put up with a few side effects.
You can't really call someone an idiot when it sounds like you base your opinions on mainstream reports and anti-psychiatry sites.

Re: why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?
your question is invalid, because ssris can make people who are not depressed happier.
ive taken four ssris for anxiety, and i am not depressed. the only one with beneficial mood lifting effects was zoloft. i felt unnaturally happy, lovey, and empathogenic (not sure if thats the right word).
prozac, celexa, and luvox had no noticeable mood change in me.

Wow, what the fuck. Too weak to put up with side effects? 70% efficacy rate? Are you fucking serious? I've never had to call such utter fucking BULLSHIT in my life. You sir, are a fucking moron.
As far as these drugs effects on "non depressed" people, actually, fuck it, I am not taking three fucking hours to explain all of this shit. The term depressed is bullshit, mental illness in general is a fucking joke, they don't know how any of it actually works or why, and they sure as fuck don't even know the exact mode of action for many of these drugs.

Re: why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?
The term depressed is bullshit
i agree with that almost 100%
there are many medical terms just thrown around alot latley, with tons of people being prescribed meds they dont actually need.
(bi-polar, depression, add, adhd)
yes, there are cases where people do actually have these things. but in the USA at least, i feel that its getting out of control. when you watch TV, you can hardly go a commercial break without hearing a commercial for one of them.
and have you ever actually taken ssri's? you havnt noticed anything different from normal? its not like its a high, but you havnt noticed any effects?
at times, ive taken ssri's just for the hell of it, and i can always feel a little somthing.

Re: why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?
They probably have a similar effect on most peoples brain but rather those who are constantly in a low mood may be more visibly changed or will notice more change than someone who is normally a happy person. This is similar for add drugs like amphetamines, they "work" the same on everyone but you may notice more change in those who "need" them.

Re: why dont ssri's work on people who are not depressed?

no, im not trying to say that. sorry for the misleading wording
when i said for the hell of it, i didnt mean it like i just randomly took them. i used to be prescribed prozac, which i felt was completly unnecissary. after around 4 months of taking it, i just decided to stop. the remainders i had left over i would take every now and then, basically to show my mom i was taking them.
so yes, i had built up a level i guess by that point, but even so, the first time i ever took it, i felt pretty much what i did every day afterwords.

i know plenty of people who have "rolled" off excedrin too, placebo is a hell of a drug
99.99% of all people i know where ssri's have worked on them are the kind of people who can talk themselves into anything and hypochondriacs etc. don't underestimate the mind man that shit is powerful

God you are so fucking stupid. Ironically I just did this psychology homework earlier today and here is all the sources you fucking faggot.
Invitation to Psychology Second Edition by Carole Wade and Carol Tavris.
This is on page 372, First paragraph right column:
The belief that antidepressants are the treatment of choice for depression is widespread, so we were as suprised as anyone to discover the large amount of evidence questioning that belief (Antonuccio et al., 1999; Valenstein, 1998). One meta-anlysis found that although clinicians considered antidepressants helpful, the patients' ratings showed no advantage for the drugs beyone the placebo effect (Greenberg et al., 1992). Another meta-analysis, of 18 double blind studies involving more then 2,000 depressed patients, found that 75 percent of the drugs' effectiveness was due to the placebo effect or other nonchemical factgors, and only 25 percent to the chimical properties of the drug (Kirsh & Sapirstein, 1998). Even Prozac, which arrived with much fanfare and enthusiam, is generally no more effective than the older generation of antidepressants (Greenberg et al., 1994)
God, I hate you so much. If you thought critically, you would know that it is important to question. Have you heard of the validity effect? Probally not, knowing you. Also known as the Big Lie, it is proven that just repeating something over and over again will get suceptible people to believe it more. Suceptible, meaning stupid. Just because Big Pharma wants your money any tells you that their products work doesn't mean they do.
More facts from the psych book:
"However, in part because of their unpleasant side effects, half to two-thirds of people stop taking them [antidepressent drugs] (Glenmullen, 2000; Torrey, 1988)."
"Antidepressants, in contrast [to antipsychotics], are assumed to be quite safe, but the effects of taking them for many years re still unknown. The general public and even many physicians do not realize that new drugs are often tested on only a few hundread people for only a few weeks or months, even when the drug is one that patients might take for many years."
Again, how are you a mod of a DRUG forum when you don't know such obvious information?
MetaFaggot, it is easy to see your next responce:
"You are lying, you don't take psychology and you just made that up 100%"
W/e, fuck you.

Webmd, bitch.

Why can't you just admit that you are WRONG? Swallow your fucking pride (and your mouth full of cum) and stop being an asshole, seriously. I hate you.

You make me laugh so much. You think I'm a loser? Well I didn't get addicted to drugs till I was well in my 20's.
