Dilly's/Xanax withdrawal - Fast answers please!
Hey everyone. I know someone (yes, it really isnt me) who is going through severe xanax withdrawal. She has taken xanax for years and has had to stop cold turkey, off of 3 mg a day. Today is day 2.
I have tried to help her with whatever I have on hand. So far 10mg Inderal, 200mg L-Theanine, and a strong cup of kava brew. The kava helped for awhile but upset her stomach too much.
Now, this person has NO tolerance to opiates, and does NOT use drugs recreationally. She has asked me to help her find anything to help her sleep etc. I can not seem to find any benzos in town right now. My friend just called and can get me 4mg Dilly's. Would it be safe to give someone going through benzo withdrawal like 1-2mg of dilaudid, oral of course, just to help with pains and such. Do opiates lower or higher seizure threshold? (Main concern)
Also, how long does the severe effects of xanax withdrawal usually last? 3-4 days?

doesn't seem like a great idea to give her opiates, seems like a really good way to get her to transfer her addiction instead of actually end it

I'm not worried about that. She has taken percs/demerol etc. after surgery, she is not a drug addict. I am looking for something to help her get through a couple days of pain from benzo withdrawal. She has no access to any opiates, nor will have any at all. I am talking about small amounts of opiates to help ease benzo withdrawal.

1) try to convince her to wean off.
2) take her to a doctor
3) yes, opiates lower seizure threashold
4) why would that be dangerous?

Because the main worry with benzo withdrawal is seizure. If opiates lower your seizure threshold, that might make taking opiates while withdrawing from benzos dangerous. Do you have any sources that say opiates do that, by the way?

Was she given a script for these Benzos? If so and (for some reason) she has had it taken away it'd be fairly easy for her to get a doc to prescribe here something like lunesta to help here sleep off the wd symptoms. If they were prescribed what kind of idiot doc would just yank her script all at once?

Why can't she get more? That's really not a good situation... If she was buyin em illegally, go buy more and put her on a taper(lowering the dose every day or two) until she's off... If it was from a doc, go ask him what the fuck he's doing cutting off a patient who's been on 3mg xanax for as long as you say she's been. You really shouldn't stop like that cold-turkey. I would reccomend muscle relaxers(soma(carisoprodol), or flexiril (cyclobenzaprine). Low doses. Also multivitamins, and like everyone else said, weed might help too.
edit- damn this slow computer. good call, mr. opiate.

About a month for the really severe effects, many months for the symptoms to slowly ease. Since she's been on them for years, it isn't going to be quick.
Don't give her any weed, as the anxiety makes benzo withdrawal a lot worse.

Re: Dilly's/Xanax withdrawal - Fast answers please!
1-2mg of hydromorphone taken orally is really quite a small dosage man. Hydromorphone is really only the uber-potent super heroin superceding drug that it's made out to be in the minds of kids who haven't taken it. Oral dosages for someone with no tolerance begin are recommended to be begun at 2-4mg every 4-6 hours, but in reality most people take upwards of 6mg's with no tolerance. The opiates will help her withdrawal yeah, but no matter what you do she's still going to feel like fucking arse man. Give her 4mg and see how she goes, if nothing else it'll calm her down a bit.
I have to question though, what sort of fucking doctor puts a patient through a cold turkey withdrawal? Dr's aren't stupid, they go to school and learn all about these drugs, what happened? If she's having full-on withdrawals she should go to the fucking dr's office now and fucking demand that he gives her something to help her whilst her body sorts itself out.

Re: Dilly's/Xanax withdrawal - Fast answers please!
Booze would probably ease the symptoms better than opiates, as benzos and alcohol both work on the same GABA receptors in the brain. Give her a few shots of spirits and see how she's feeling. Then if it works, keep it going and wean her off the booze.

Seriously, why did it take so long for someone to say this?
Aside from the people who are going to say "oh yeah you're just substituting an addiction", as far as helping keep the seizure threshold down and assisting in the insomnia/anxiety of the withdrawals, alcohol is going to help a lot more than anything else. Dude above me hit it spot-on basically; alcy likes GABA, and benzos do, too.
I can also attest to the effectiveness of this because I've done it myself and it definitely makes life easier for you until you can ride the storm out a little bit longer.
Don't give her a shit-ton of booze or anything because it'll just pro-long things in the end, but using it as a tapering mechanism in place of the alprazolam is perfectly fine, IMHO. Just don't let her get wild with it...

Same here - I was arrested at a time when I was pretty badly addicted to opiates and benzos. Because the police confiscated my stash as evidence, I was WD'ing badly off both at the same time, and my doctor wouldn't prescribe anything to wean me off. So I started drinking booze just to ease the benzo WD's, which also made the opiate WD's easier to deal with. Then I gradually cut myself down off the booze. Made it a hell of a lot easier to deal with than going cold turkey.

she needs to go to a doctor and use a taper down method if she has been using for years then i would get some benzos back in her now.

Alcohol might be more similar a substitute, but from experience, I can say that some strong painkiller will be enough to change withdrawls into a nice fun nod.

Really though Dilly is one of the most habit forming and tolerance building opes. This is a dumb idea. Use Codeine and marijuana. Other than intence itching Codeine is great and probably does not lower seizure thresholds as much and gives a great but short lived rushy high.
