Default Logging into GNOME throught the command line

I have a server which has a VNC server and an SSH server running on it. For remote maintenance I prefer to use VNC but when I reboot the comp it goes to the login screen and I can't connect to VNC unless its already logged into GNOME.

I can log in to the command line through SSH though. I tried using the gnome-session command but it keeps giving me this error message.
Quote:
(gnome-session:5569): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
I googled that error message but everyone that asked questions about it seems to be trying to open up the X Window on their own client comp rather than starting up GNOME on the remote server like I'm trying to do.

X11 forwarding needs to be enabled on the remote side and you need to specify you're using it on the client. This can be done with the -X flag for ssh, and the line "X11Forwarding yes" in your sshd.conf.

You will need to edit the /etc/inittab first, and set the run level to 5.
If you do not know how to do this, RTFMP ( man inittab ).
Then install either KDM or GDM ( if it is not already installed ).
Configure them to auto-log you in.

Yeah I could do that I could even disable the login screen altogether but I dont want people fuckin with the external harddrive connected to the server. I have it set so my account has write to the external harddrive but the guest account with no password cant.

That's a stupid solution for this. Set up your system not to require itself to be brutally hacked for it to function, and your problems will cease.
