Me and a friend of mine hotboxed in his SUV before heading in the mall. We parked in an area where there were some cars, but it was mostly secluded, so it wouldn't look to suspicious.

We were about the end of the joint and high as fuck, and then the security fucking rolls up in their car and starts to get out. I'm like FUCK DUDE SECURITY! He slowly backs up and starts driving around the mall, and they didn't follow. We just ended up parking somewhere else and going in.

But my question is what could they have done? It was pretty obvious they knew what we were doing, but didn't follow. Could they call the cops while they retain us?

Looking back on it it probably wasn't such a big deal, but we were scared as fuck at the time.

This. My friend used to work for Brightpoint, which deals with rent-a-cop security. You are literally nothing but a citizen in security clothes. You cannot detain anyone, you cannot search anyone. All you can do is cry wolf to your supervisor, who can only call the real police. By then, I'd be good and out of there. Besides, ANYONE can apply. They're mostly just people who are bored as fuck and don't care.

Some rent-a-cops are armed, though. Those are the retired policemen who have nothing better to do. Watch out for those guys.

I actually have a few friends who got rolled by rent-a-cops. They were in a mall parking lot smoking in a car when a bunch of security guards pulled up in golf carts and surrounded the car so they couldn't back out. They took them into some room in the mall and called their parents. They said the security guards were actually pretty nice guys besides the fact that they called their parents.

I was skating through a local mini-mall one day (there were obvious no skating signs around) and one of them grabbed me by the shoulder. I turned around, looked at him and told him that he had just committed assault, and that if he reached toward me again I'd consider it an attack, and respond accordingly. He started to reach for his Mace, saying "You haven't seen assault yet" and I reached for my knife. He had his hand on his Mace, and I had my knife out with the blade still closed. He looked at me, shocked. I told him I was going to go about my business (I was trying to leave the plaza anyway) and he wasn't gonna do shit about it. He was "kind" enough to "allow" me to leave.

Point being, if he had any kind of authority, I'd have been Maced, probably tackled and may or may not have had to stab him. He knew he couldn't put a hand on me or I'd own him.

I work security, and I can tell you as long as you aren't like loitering and being obvious in front of a store, you won't be bothered probably. Even then, a security guard would just call the cops if they even cared. I would tell kids to leave the property before I think about calling the cops anyways.

When I was in highschool my friends used to play tag in malls. Me and this other dude were running from the person who was it and got tackled and hand cuffed by these security dicks. My friend resisted and the fucker kidney punched him. They then took us into a room in the security office and cuffed us to a bench the same way they do at a booking room in a police station. They yelled at us for a long time kept telling us the police were on there way when we told them it was illegal to hold us because they weren't cops. After like an hour and a half the cops finally came and called our parents and told us we'd be released when our parents came to get us. My parents didn't answer the phone and the security dicks finally let me walk home at closing. I'm almost positive they can detain you...

they sure as hell can detain you. but they can only detain you in teh parking lot if they are employed by the OWNER of the parking lot. Most malls are on property owned by landlords and the security are employed by the owners of the mall who are renting the land from the landlord.

stores that are in small mini-malls are almost exclusively renting the space and only have authority up to the sidewalk. they cannot legally touch you off of their employers property. and their employers rarely own the parking lot.

Most mall security are just wash outs from the police academy who could not handle real physical work or were too dumb to pass the tests. they usually are only given a uniform and radio, possibly handcuffs and anything else they wear is bought by them. hell some walk around dressed like fucking SWAT team guys even though all they can do is yell at you and call their supervisor who can then decide if its worth calling the real cops but by the time they get ahold of their boss you can simply walk/drive away and they cannot do shit.

Your first point about property is spot on. When I work at Sobeys (grocery store) I have authority (and only give a shit about) the actual store, and the parking lot they own.

Your second point, which has been brought up by several people, is fucking ignorant and stupid. I have no desire to be a cop, and only a few security guards in my company are even thinking of being cops. This is a JOB for us, and often it's an easy job where I just walk around, sometimes I just watch construction sites all night and get high and sit in a car doing fuck all. We're not all cop wannabes that yell at people for no reason and tackle people. Wanna know why we hardly ever get involved physically? First of all, we can get sued for just punching some random person in the face when it's not self defence. Second, it's the police's job to arrest a violent person. If I catch a kid shoplifting I'd grab them if they ran, but I'm not gonna get into a fight with 4 huge guys. As for not doing anything physical, there's many different kinds of security. Come work here in a bar, or work at a motorcycle race/festival and tell me there's nothing physical about it.

Yeah, I used to work at a Stater Bros (grocery store chain in california) and one time some tweaked out mofo was trying to walk out with a RIDICULOUS amount of alcohol in his sweater. And I mean ridiculous. Dude had to waddle his way out, he was going out twice the size he was when he came in! Anyway, myself, another clerk, and the security guard all jumped his ass and took him down while one cuffed him and we took him to the break room until the real cops came.

People keep thinking security can't do shit. They sure can. It is called citizen arrest. They can take any reasonable actions to detain you until police arrive. And if you resist they can use more force....Granted youcan sue them if it turns out you broke no law. But cops will usually always side with them as will the DA....they CAN be bribed easier though and you can't be busted for trying to bribe them.

one time in this parking garage on the 2nd floor we were smoking and we were being trapped by this security cart. well, we just slowly backed up until he was forced to move out of the way, casually took our time pulling out, then drove right out.

another time was in this underground garage underneath this train station my friend used to work at, it was a black 40 y/o looking guy just on foot, and he gave us the thumbs up. incidentally he ended up being a pretty good connection for alcohol as a liquor store was across the street, he just wanted 5$. he also sold xanax for 5$/each so i never bought any but i thought that was pretty cool. theres better places now, but still he was a pretty chill nigger.
