Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default could i have been hacked?

so the other day my brother downloaded a file from limewire. it was the song he wanted, but it wasnt actually the song because it was like 32kb. anyways like a minute after it downloaded i realized and deleted it but later that day and still today my computer is acting weird.

when i go on my email it always shows the current events, but sometimes when i go on it shows the events from a few days ago. is it a fake page or is there something wrong with yahoo? and when i quit safari a few times now ive had to force quit because it wasnt responding.

this probably isnt anything, and im just getting paranoid, but is there anything i can/should do? i keep thinking it might be that limewire file. sorry if this is completely retarded, i dont know a lot about computers and im trippin

You should usually tell people you're asking for help what software you're running, but since you said safari, I assume you're on Apple's OS X, in which case you probably weren't.

Unless your bro actually changed the fake song's extension from .mp3 to .exe and ran it, you've got nothin to worry about. Something else is hoggin your system up.

Or it could be a small 1kb MP3 file that had been bound to a virus/keylogger.

Unless that mp3 was actually an exe. You can name something xsong.mp3.exe, and change the icon to be a windows media player icon. If you didn't change the default option of "hide extensions of known file types", and you tried to play that track, you very well would have got pwned, if in fact that really was a virus. So yes, you do have something to worry about. Assume you did get pwned and run a virus scan.

Now I see why so many blithering morons were complaining about fake files and viruses on Kazaa/LimeWire and require the idiot-proof BitTorrent app to download their shit.

Fucking sad.

There is a lot of files like that on limewire. Best thing to do as legally obtain your music.

Not every song is officially published or available on the market. What about independant derivatives and remixes?
