Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought.

Default Your candidate or lesser of two evils?

I really don't know how to vote this November. Should I write in Ron Paul, or should I vote for Obama because he is not as bad as McCain.

I know that writing in RP will have no effect in the big picture, however it is the correct way to vote (voting for who YOU want to win.) On the flip-side, I know that this race, like every other, is a two-candidate race. I don't like Obama and I especially don't like McCain, but one of them is going to win and my vote would go much further in choosing the next president if I vote for one of them (Compared to just voting for RP.)

So what do you guys think?

So you're torn between two people whose opinions are diametrically opposed to one another? Paul and Obama?

Both oppose the Iraq war and both push for civil liberties.

Obama is for alternative energy and Paul is for letting the market bring it into fruition. On the other hand Paul supports Second Amerndment rights greatly, but Obama wants gun control.

On those two issues I am very torn. I am very much for second amendment rights, but we are far beyond the point of letting the market come up with an alternative energy infrastructure, so I am very much opposed to Paul's hands-off approach. The oil companies have had so much government subsidization in building its infrastructure it is too late to just "let it happen" when we are within a handful of years before the shit hits the fan. The same with corn ethanol. Companies have had so much subsidization to produce corn the ethanol research and manufacturing infrastructure is almost completely focused on corn, which is one of the absolute worst ways to produce ethanol in both yield and sustainability. Sorry, but the free market is only a magic bullet when you have relatively infinite time to solve the problem, the problem being compounded by government interference and subsidized infrastructure. For fucks sake look at our internet connectivity infrastructure!

The free market will not solve the alternative energy problem in the amount of time we have left to get our shit together.

Wow. Paul and Obama agree on one two issues: the Iraq War(but not any other part of our foreign policy) and opposing the Patriot Act.

You wanted to know what to do. I pointed out that its silly that you think Obama is better than McCain even though McCain's views more closely coincide with Ron Paul's. Except the Iraq War, which as it turns out, we have basically won.

Anyway. With this new agreement we're working on with the Iraqis, we should be out sometime in 2011. Thanks to Bush.

^ ... stop zmanning the thread. You're making us all dumber.

OP: Vote for the person you think would do the best job leading this country regardless of their chance at actually winning the election.

We should have been out years ago. Cheney and friends have had a decade to think this through. They are not stupid people; their predictins were exactly correct: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BEsZMvrq-I They knew exactly what was going to happen and had plenty of time to figure out how to make it work.... but they didn't. All the pieces fell into place.

Fuck Bush. I may not agree with going to war in the first place, but you cannot possibly deny that the war was mishandled even 72 hours before the invasion. Any possibility of finding a smoking gun was gone. You wonder why we didn't find anything, even if we knew it was there: blame Bush.
