I currently bring home around $1,100 per month and live semi-comfortably. There are a few things that could be done to make my living situation slightly easier, such as not having to drive, or having enough stashed back in case I get injured or very sick. I'd be doing very well for myself with $1,500 per month at this point in time.

As long as there's a demand and money involved, people will choose to become doctors. Many of them are very passionate about the work itself anyways. I never said that people should abandon all high-paying jobs...

This thread is (clearly) about people that just mindlessly pursue some job with huge pay, regardless of whether they're interested in it, or if they even need the money to support the life they want. My point is that if you don't plan on getting a massive house and raising a large family, I think you can have a very "upper-class lifestyle" even without an "upper-class income".

"No" isnt' a rebuttal to what I just said. Instead of just saying "OMG NO IT CAN'T WORK", why don't you consider what I'm saying, think about the job you'll have, and do the math yourself.

Excluding buying a mansion or an expensive car collection, you can do just about anything you want. For my plan, I'll have 25k per year at retirement (assuming I live for 40 more years, and not including job pension). Half of that would go to property taxes and living expenses, and I personally will probably travel somewhere every year (flying to and staying in a place for a couple weeks is very doable for around 2000, though you'd want 3000 just in case). Maybe I was unclear, but I don't think of a comfortable, "upper-class lifestyle' as necessarily owning a jet, a yacht, a mansion, and a Ferrari. Having a nice place, nice furniture, classy clothes, plenty to eat, and lots of money to spare is an upper-class lifestyle for me. And I suppose just how far that spare money takes you depends on what you like. I'd rather go do something fun than just buy expensive status-making items.

I looked up the costs for a boat, by the way (I'm not interested in that, but someone mentioned it and I was curious), and that apparently costs around 25k/year just to maintain, plus the initial 40k pricetag.

I don't want to have to wait until I'm 50 until I can enjoy life. Sure you could probably live comfortably on 35k a year. But to do that you need to not have kids and not buy a house and no blah blah blah.

With the economy the way it is. Yes you do need a lot of money to live life enjoyably.

Why would someone want to endure 18 years of schooling, then go get a job that only pulls in 35k. So they can work, come home to their shitty flat, eat cheap food and then go to sleep. All for 30 odd years. 30 fucking years! screw that. Just so they can have 25K to live off each year when they are retired.

I repeat, I want to enjoy every god damn day of my life! That's why I want to make 'Tons' of money.

What did I first say? I said right now I'm living comfortably on 14400. Projecting things a bit into the future, I would expect to live a little more comfortably (ie. nicer apartment, although my current one is very nice) for 20k a year. The job I'm particularly interested in will pull in about 35k initially (again, that's after taxes have been taken out), and that will go up as I get more experience. The result is that I live well on only 20k out of that 35k, and I can build a modest fortune with the savings, giving me lots of financial freedom.

Just to give you an idea of what my life is like for 14400: I have a big 2 1/2 apartment (~600 bucks) in a nice neighborhood right near downtown. I cook big meals every night (lots of Italian food, though a bit of everything really; seafood, steak, or chicken-dishes every night; cooking is also a hobby of mine), have plenty of entertainment (internet is the biggest thing, though I've got DVDs and TV as well), lots of nice clothes (lots of designer stuff), a nice liquor collection, and I usually go out twice a week.

I just think that 1) people misjudge how much money they need to live a really nice life as a single person, and 2) People spend too much of their spare money, instead of just saving it. If you've got a classy apartment, classy clothes, and lots of spare money...I'd consider that being "rich". You've got your limits, of course, but if you aren't into insanely extravagant things, I don't think it's a problem.

And of course, yes: This does assume that you aren't planning on raising a family. That's not my thing, so I'm not concerned with it. (I did consider it as a possibility, and I don't think a wife and kid would really hurt my master plan too much. I'd just have to be responsible about the timing)

Oh, by the way: the idea is to have a career that you enjoy. I guess I should have mentioned that. One of my points was that people don't really appreciate all of the low or middle-income jobs out there, regardless of how fun they might be, simply because they don't yield 100k+ on a yearly basis. Heh...if my job options were all just mind-numbing crap, I'd definitely be shooting for a high-paying one in that case.

...err yeah, edited my post.

For people in your area and others a like then maybe that sort of income would be ideal. But I know around here that you could easily add on another $10K a year to live in a nice apartment and eat well.

I know what you are saying though, you don't need to earn a damn lot to live life well. Your income needed will vary greatly depending on where you are living and what your lifestyle is. But the average income (around here at least) won't allow you to live that.

And like you've said, no kids and no house then sure. Life shall be easy for you.

Don't forget your CD ladders, DerDrache. This will slowly grow your money if you don't feel comfortable risking your money on the stock market or real estate. If the first year you saved up all your cash and at the end you set up a CD acount with a reasonable 4% interest rate and annual compounding, you would get 800 dollars. 2nd year, 1600. By the time you retire this number will be exponentially higher.

Try it yourself: http://www.bankrate.com/brm/calculat...rodtype=invest In the first 5 years you'll make 8,000 dollars saving, just doing nothing.

A cd is basically a bank deposit you agree not to withdraw for a set amount of time(6 months, 1 year, 5 years). You can add to it, but if you withdraw early there's a penalty. Usually the interest rates are higher than regular savings accounts. The longer you agreee to wait for your money, the higher it is.

CDs suck, you barely beat inflation(the fake estimate the government creates). An index fund is way better, but the stock market is still pretty bad.

I would never work again if I had a million dollars. No, I'm not kidding. With my million dollars I would simply shop around till a bank agreed to give me 9-10% APY on my money(with a million bucks you get a little haggle room trust me). Then, I would make 90-100 grand a year just from collecting my interest. Even a 5.5% savings account would give you 55k a year.

I would take 20-30k a year and use it for investments, and use the remainder to live comfortable throughout the year. I would just keep working my mediocre job as usual for the first year till my account gained the first 90-100k. Then, I would give 2 weeks notice at my job, buy a top of the line RV on my credit card, drive around for a year or so, camping, smoking weed and scoping out cool places to live.

After I found a comfortable home base, I would travel around the world most of the time. I would live like a king in various places where I could do it cheaply Thailand, South Korea, etc, buying real estate in exotic locations here and there. All the while using credit as much as possible and just paying my bills on time, saving more and more cash assets, sliver, gold, land etc. In short, it's doable.

interest earned on One Million Dollars:
(4% interest rate, compounded monthly)

One Day - $109.59

One Month - $3,333.33

One Year - $40,741.54

Five Years - $220,996.59

Ten Years - $490,832.68

Twenty Years - $1,222,582.09

Would having that million divided up in multiple accounts still earn you the same interest though? I could try to do the math... but I'm tired.

I would be hesitant to put all my eggs in one basket, since the FDIC wouldn't be there to help you if the bank goes under or gets robbed. You would need to keep it under 100k.

1% of 200 is 2.
1% of 100 is 1.

So yeah, you'd earn the same interest.

So? How the fuck would I know what the interest rates are for 100k versus a million bucks. I just said that if the rates are the same, then you'd make the same amount of money regardless of how the money was split.

I think it is your disconnectedness with financial reality that prevents you from giving a shit about this. Your comet example wasn't entirely accurate either, because if you knew for sure a comet was coming towards the earth soon, you'd prepare for it by doing a bunch of shit you want to do before you die. So it is possible to prepare for this. There's no reason to leave it up to Zay to hand you the solution, do your own research.

You told me not to mention your career goals, but think about this: what about you makes you an attractive employee for the type of organization you want to work for? What the hell do you have, or will you have in that area? All your ass is going to have as it stands now is a bachelor's in psychology. So one way you could prepare for this and actually do something to "deal with it" is beef up your resume in the areas that needs to be addressed.
If I really couldn't find a job, I'd join the military. Not begrudgingly either, and I'm not just saying that lightly. (I'm actually seriously considering joining it anyways, even with my degree.) If I couldn't do that for some unexpected reason, I'd find something else. There's always something.

And I don't know about you, but beefing up a resume is common sense. I won't go into the details of my resume, but it kicks a fair bit of ass for someone that doesn't even have a degree yet. I know you think I'm a dick for not having had any dead-end Walmart-style jobs, but the jobs I have had actually gave me some valuable career skills. Like I said, I'm just not really that worried.

Anyways, I'm glad you actually have a proactive suggestion in case the economy collapses. That's a lot better than just sitting there pissing yourself while saying "OMG SOMETIME IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS AMERICA IS GONNA TURN TO SHIT!11 OMG I READ IT IN SOME EDITORIALS!"

The basic principles are save and not spend money on stupid shit. The possibility of not getting a job would always ruin the plan, but so would getting hit by a bus.
