network card, sound card, fucked file system help

i havent been posting here recently but used to help if anyone remembers.
ubuntu 8.04
very familiar with linux
im stumped on this one
it started when one day all of a sudden my computer froze when i launched a .wmv(porn) file in totem or kaffeine or even vlc
when it would freeze i would have to manually shut off the power, no i couldnt switch to a text console, or restart X or any of the normal sensible things i would do. it all froze.
when i restarted it would go through a file system check and would normally fix it. then it started freezing mid check causing me to shut down manually again.
and then all of a sudden a few days ago when it finally booted up, after manual fsck and the like, i had no more sound or wireless internet. it just doesnt recognize it at all anymore, when before they worked without any configuration.

anybody help me?

The files that control those systems may have been damaged or corrupted. If you have to run fsck manually, that's a serious issue, and you need to take action to fix the problem.

I would boot off of a liveCD and run fsck over the filesystems, and then mount the filesystem and check the config files for damage. Reconfigure syslogd to log as much as you can, then boot back into the system again and reproduce the crash. After reproducing it, boot off of the liveCD and examine the logs. Hopefully you'll find something you can use.

Something similar happened to me after I started outputting videos from my laptop to the TV then when I pulled the wire out and tried to play videos on the laptop the screen would go blue or orange or some other color and freeze. No way out of it other than holding down the power button on the laptop. Happened about 10 times then I changed the screen resolution and it fixed the problem.
