| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Email question
Sorry to bother the forum with a n00b question, but I know nothing about this kind of stuff. If I create a gmail for myself and then send an email to Bob from my home computer, is it possible for Bob to figure out the physical location that the email was sent from? Would it be any different if I used https? Thanks in advance.

Re: Email question
It could be included in the mail headers, and https wouldn't make any difference. HTTPS doesn't obfuscate where the traffic is going to or coming from, it just encrypts it so it's unreadable to anyone but the two endpoints.

Re: Email question
As for actual physical location, that's unlikely. More likely that they'd get the city your ISP's servers are located in.
For example, I'm more than 50 miles north of Pittsburgh, but that is where I'd appear to be if you checked my IP address.

That's until they get law enforcement involved and the order your ISP to hand over your address.

Paranoid, the lot of you are freaking paranoid.
edit: That's probably a good thing, now that I think of it.

No, that's what happens on a daily basis. Fuck, all you have to do is say "DMCA, gimme this guy's name, address, phone number, and credit card info" and the ISP will drop their pants and let you go at it. That isn't paranoid at all.

Re: Email question
So, as long as I don't piss off anyone in the FBI, I'm good? Thanks for the replies : D.

Unfortunately, you don't have to be the FBI to send a DMCA takedown notice.

Re: Email question
I was exaggerating - I should have said 'law enforcement.'
