it was my understanding that if you call a payphone, you have to pay however much the call would cost. like if it's 50 cents unlimited time...you get charged 50 cents. if it's 25 cents a minute cause you called long distance...well....
the ones for my city are really old. a lot of the businesses listed have closed up, haha, and it has the old area code, which we switched from like 12 years ago. oh well.
they've also taken a lot of payphones out recently. there used to be a few within a few blocks of my house but now i don't know where the closest one is.

I hadn't seen this thread then, but I tried this a few days ago to a public phone in the library, the fucking thing is ringing at 100dB but noone notices, not the guy sitting fucking next to it. so i call it a few hundred more times, then call it operator assisted and ask for "Tim - it's an emergency", the response: "You've come through to a public phone in the library, no tim here". So i thought man fuck you and called a few more times, then she (librarian) just got shitty and took it off the hook :P
