| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Can i extract the possible psychoactive "goodness" of hops?
Is the, commercially available, non-bitter "hop oil" a possible source?
What is the somniferous chemical, i seek, in the hop?
Is it an oil, if so, what is the V.P? Could a dry organic extraction suffice?
Or...should I go pick up a Silk screen?
What mesh would you recommend?

Nah, I think hops actually is somewhat psychoactive by itself, but I have no clue in what way, or how to get the drugs.

Re: Can i extract the possible psychoactive "goodness" of hops?
The hops used to make beer are the flower of the hop vine, which is a member of the hemp family (Cannabaceae). Hops are closely related to another member of the hemp family that you may have heard of — cannabis, or marijuana, although hops do not have the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana.
here is a link with some cool pics showing how closely related they are - http://forums.mycotopia.net/botanica...ulus-hops.html
I honestly don't think there good for much more than brewing...

Hops are definitely psychoactive plants. They contain estrogenic and soporific compounds; (the former being great for women in menopause, but prone to cause a malady among male brewers and innkeepers called "brewer's droop", according to that there All About Beer article.). Not being stimulants, they're kind of the opposite of the herbs in gruit. Hops effects were well known before its introduction to beer.

Hops are mildly psychoactive. They sell something called hop oil at crappy homebrew supply shops. The stuff absolutely sucks to work with when brewing beer, but may have some use, on its own, recreationally speaking. Buy some and write up a trip report.

Re: Can i extract the possible psychoactive "goodness" of hops?
Do they use hops in beer for its bitter taste, or because it is mildly psychoactive?

"By the twelth century hops was also regarded as an aperitive, a depurative and a laxative, and was highly regarded for its sedative and relaxing properties."
I brew beer. Yes hops, while mainly used to balance the sweet alcoholic taste imparted by the malt with their bitterness, do also give beer it's calming relaxing effect that make it a slightly different drunkenness than straight up alcohol.

I definetly notice a major difference when I drink beer. With beer it feels better and makes me more tired. hard liquor feels much different.

Yes!

Fuck if I know!
What is the somniferous chemical, i seek, in the hop?
I believe it's 2-methyl-2-hydroxybutane, but 2-methylbutric acid is also noted as of interest to investigatory research.
Is it an oil
Yes!
if so, what is the V.P? Could a dry organic extraction suffice?
Tincture, motherfucker. Does you speaks it?
Or...should I go pick up a Silk screen?
Pressed lupulin is also prized, but evaporated tincture is just plain easy and effective.
What mesh would you recommend?
Loose! You're just trying to keep really broad papery petals from falling through!
While, like most sedatives, not very "fun" without the presence of other drugs, a crude extract does tend to knock people on their ass in small quantities.

Re: Can i extract the possible psychoactive "goodness" of hops?
Thanks JP!
If im not mistaken, The freshness of the plant matter directly correlates to the effects.
Noting the anecdotal "curring barn" effect; I was considering the possibility that the active chemical(s) are probably volatile to a significant degree.
2-methylbutyric acid is hardly of interest, in respect to the hop plant.
and then..... 2-methyl-2-hydroxybutane is unaccounted, unless somehow you factor in the actual brewing process (i cant understand the maltic acid reactions mentioned in the paper i browsed through)
You are pulling my LEG.....
I am no organic chemist, but i know some nomenclature....and i also know how to use Google.
After doing just that i am going to chose to not pursue doing anything. (i have the opportunity to get fresh hops for free)
After reading all this "non-combustible" information, the best conclusion i have come to is: that i prefer my hops, like my soy; fermented and aged
